Team Ireland Daily Diary at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

Yeah "resources" was probably not the right word there. "Efforts" might have been better. There's no reason, in principle, why someone from Portland Row couldn't be every bit as good a cyclist or a swimmer as someone from rural Sligo or somewhere in Armagh. We just need to continue to steadily build.the facilities and get the programmes in place to give people easy access to them, and not just the people that can easily afford it. The situation with boxing might resolve itself anyway in terms of it being removed from the games after everything that's been going on this week.

They did it lads. What a win that was! Second gold medal of these Games . McCarthy and O’Donovan will go down as a couple of the biggest legends in Irish sporting history for years to come!

Never in doubt really, don't think I've ever been as relaxed watching an Ireland entry in an Olympic final, even three years ago was tighter than that I'm sure.

An Irish medal a day for five straight days, including two gold. Unprecedented. The question now is can we get another today in either sailing or showjumping?

Well the sailors totally botched that. What else to say.

It was on the cards since yesterday. I’m really annoyed at that. Finishing 9th ffs.

Totally blew it alright 😥

Uruguay and Poland had nothing to lose by trying to get the perfect start. Ireland had everything to lose and did. Have to say that was really naive.

Yeah and after all a 4th place finish is commendable for this duo. But my God you can’t compliment them on that…. really amateur there. I know I’m being harsh but sometimes you have to be, if for nothing else for your own sanity.

    • Wrestling will have a completely new format, I do not like the changes. ranking isn't really a good idea in this sport, this will force wrestlers to compete in so many events to collect points. which is not good for their health. specially with the current UWW ranking points distribution system which is plain stupid   they are also gifting 18 quotas to very weak countries by that last qualification event. but I understand their point of view. can't wait to see lots of Russian wrestlers compete for weak countries for that 1 available quota.
    • Canoe Slalom Quotas from men's/women's K1 have been moved to men's/women's KX1. K1 will now have 14 quotas while KX1 will have 10 quotas. C1 remains at 17 quotas. Athletes may participate in other events up to a maximum of 2 athletes per NOC.   The World Championship qualifier has been dropped in favour of the Olympic Qualification Rankings (7 K1, 10 C1, 3 KX1), afterwards you have the Continental Qualifiers (1 per boat) and then a new Global Qualifier (2 per boat).   There were a few changes regarding ways to ensure an athlete can only obtain 1 quota. The biggest being at each stage the boat priority is K1 > KX1 > C1 for the rankings and KX1 > K1 > C1 for the continental/global qualifiers. This basically means if the same athlete qualifiers in multiple boats then the quota will be given to the kayak over canoe.
    • I'll post significant changes periodically. I'll start with the recently added/updated documents.   Archery The addition of mixed compound (12M & 12W) forced a reduction on the recurve side. The mixed compound quotas are distributed as follows   Host - 1 World Championships - 3 Continental Games - 5 World Ranking List - 2 Final Qualifier - 1   To compensate the team events will now only have 8 nations. 2 quotas were removed from the World Ranking List and 2 were removed from the Final Qualifier.   Individual recurve and mixed recurve distribution is the same
    • In Rome, it would be useful to roof the swimming pool complex at Foro Italico, possibly with the option of retracting the roof and covering the tennis court complex. Overall, there's a lot to do, for example, compared to Budapest, but unfortunately, this is Italy How many years has Roma been building their new stadium, and they keep pushing back the completion date- now I read it's 2030? and it should be ready. The same goes for Milan- there should be a modern complex of indoor swimming pools with 50 meters pools, etc., but there's a problem with one stupid football stadium, which will only be built after an ultimatum from UEFA

    • impossible, there are not enough venues in both towns and I mean, Milan doesn't have an Olympic Stadium, a decent Tennis Complex and a big Swimming Complex (not to mention the sea) Rome, on the other hand, doesn't have a Rowing/Canoeing Basin nor arenas and stadiums for the team sports beyond football and rugby there's no chance that all those venues would be built from scratch, meanwhile if we use both cities we already have almost everything we need, especially the most expensive and controversial sites
