Harry Hudson wins gold in the men's junior road race at the UCI Road World Championships

Just went back to watch it.  Really amazing, up there with any of the great :GBR wins. Went solo from 36km out, never had a kead of more that 40-odd secs, but saw off challenger after challenger.  :bowdown:

Nice story today. Zeb Kyffin started the season in the Div 3 British St Pirrin Team, did well at the Tour of Britain, got a pro contract & this morning got his first big win at the Tour de Lankawi!

So the World Track final total was 14 medals overall 4G 8S 3B, and in a really good place with the Olympic Qualifying cycle starting with the 2026 World Cups.

Agree it was a pretty solid championships - although to come away with only 1 gold in the 12 Olympic events is a bit disappointing.

My takeaways, for what they're worth:

  • Emma Finucane has maintained her great form. She was unlucky to be relegated in her sprint QF but she'll learn from that. On the upside, she was then able to get her tactics right in the Keirin.
  • The Women's Team Sprint was competitive even though it was not our strongest team. Worth pointing out that neither Moir or Parris-Smith is currently on the Podium Squad so whilst valuable experience for them, I would assume that the team will be stronger next year.
  • As usual, we were strong across the women's endurance events. Not sure what the thought process was for the women's team pursuit though - leaving Archibald out of the team dropped them from contending for Gold to contending for bronze.
  • Matt Richardson's decision to come home has definitely strengthened the team sprint. in the last Olympic cycle, it always felt like we were competing for bronze at best and were beginning to fall behind nations like Poland and Japan. The next challenge is getting the rest of the line up right.
  • The biggest concern would probably be the men's team pursuit - that was a shockingly poor ride in the 1st round.

Is it confirmed that the ranking window opens in 2026? For Paris it was the Nations Cup events from 2023 and 2024 that were included which would suggest that the ranking window for LA won't start until 2027

Actually it is the 2026 World Champs - but of course World Champs Q is via the World Cup so.....

Speaking to BBC Sport, GB sprint coach and seven-time Olympic champion Sir Jason Kenny said: "We've missed out on some medals that we felt we could have been competitive for, but we've come away with a really good haul with some new medallists, so it's really exciting.

"The fact that we were on the podium more than ever shows that we were competitive across the board, and it's really positive.

"Next year's World Championships will go towards Olympic qualification so things will start getting really serious, and I think given the age profile of the team - and the fact that we are so competitive in so many events - is a really good place to start the Olympic journey."

I'll bow to his knowledge and assume that the UCI have changed their qualification process. For Paris it was just the 2023 World champs that counted - which was why we all had minor panic about our men's team pursuit when they crashed out in Glasgow - but that may have been due to the shorter Olympic cycle. If they've reverted back to previous qualification pathways, then Kenny would be right and 2026 Worlds would be the first qualifying event.

About Womens team sprint: Parris - Smith was particularly impressive, I believe she split within a tenth of Marchant's best ever split on the first lap. She's only 23 and rapidly improving, I think she'll take Marchant's P1 spot for good going forward.

Men's team pursuit I'm not too worried about considering we almost had a B team. We were without stalwarts in Vernon and Hayter who would have made a massive difference + we could potentialy bring in Tarling and / or Junior WR holder Henry Hobbs going into LA. The Danish look phenomenal right now though.

tarling in the omnium would be a beast

What does the LA schedule look like for doubling up? I assume his priority will be the individual time trial on the road

    • I agree NO to Poomsae!!!   I think they plan to introduce 6 weight classes after LA instead of 8 right now, and those 6 should become Olympic instead of current 4 weights. Going forward world and Olympic ranking could be identical.    But it’s not clear if that means more quotas. Having 6 classes with 64 athletes per gender would be a joke. A reasonable taekwondo competition needs at least 16 athletes per weightclass. But I am not sure taekwondo can get another 64 quotas in total, I doubt it.    beside that I am not happy with the newly proposed weight classes, they give much more focus on light weight athletes, which will be an advantage for Asian countries mainly.    if the proposal is accepted the new weightclasses will be:    Female: 46kg, 51kg, 57kg, 63kg,70kg and +70kg    Male: 54kg, 60kg, 67kg,74kg, 82kg, +82kg
