Looking at those names, it's mostly a prize for "Best athlete or team who didn't quite make the cut in the list for the real prize"

I only see it now really. How can you nominate two basketball players (whoever Stephen Curry is :p) and not Wayde van Niekerk?

I thought Laureus was actually serious...

And how on earth can one of the biggest names in current sports win "breakthrough of the year" after already being a consistent race winner and finishing 2nd in the world championship standings in the two previous years?

Cuz this shit is funded by Mercedes

On the Laurus site: The first unanimous winner of the NBA’s regular season Most Valuable Player award, in 2015/16, as Golden State Warriors broke the NBA record for most wins in a season with 73. Was also the first to make more than 400 three-pointers in a season. :p

Then he should have won the prize for sportsman of the year :p

They can't be so obvious, that's why they give him some random category.

These awards ain't serious, it's all commercial interests. They give prizes to people who are super popular in countries where they can sell cars (USA, UK, Germany, Australia, etc) and leave some categories to lesser known people to give an image of "plurality".
