I thought it might be good to have a general chat thread, just for all kinds of stuff and for some general talk :p

We didn't have it on the old forum, often resulting in these kind of things ending up in all kinds of other threads :d

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello everyone! Who frequently edits the Wikipedia pages related to Olympics, especially on the NOC pages for the upcoming Games? A user named Sportsfan 1234 harassed me about my updates on bolding the numbers, and that user kept on warning me more than anybody else pertaining to the issue. I may ask you guys a question. Is it appropriate to use the ff. models for the infobox country template on the number of competitors?

For example: Aruba at the 2016

Competitors     4 in 1 sport (Sportsfan 1234 assumed that it does not follow the MOS)

Competitors     4 in 1 sport (bolding on the number of sports has been disregarded)

Competitors     4

No. of Sports    1

i want to say something : i'm into other sites/forum and they orgagnize many things in the same time it's cool , they are very dynamic

in this forum everything is long heavy for example in the songs contest users need 2 month for register , 6 month for choose one song 6 month for posting the votes ...etc  it's very slow  , i wanted to organize it they told me "you have to wait the next year" and it's the same thing with predictions and other threads ...

look at the ranking of this forum maybe it's the last one in the world :

if you want long life for this forum  people should change their mentality and become dynamic  , some users are online during the week and they post nothing no thread no words

When talking specifically about the song contests, it's "slow" because it's a general pattern to follow. I mean, the "real" Eurovision Song Contest also doesn't happen every week :p

Apart from that, I agree with you. I remember once asking if I could open a cyclo-cross thread because talking about cyclo-cross in the road cycling thread was just making no sense at all. The answer was something like "After 1 January we will look at the possibilities"....like the world would suddenly be different at 1 January :d

it was one example and LOL orgagnize eurovision needs much time /money selecting songs/clip in each country the hall  ...etc.. but here you can do everything by  few click  in few minutes:d

and yes they say that after 1 january the next month the next year in 2019...etc  this forum will never improve like that ,in other sites they do much effort

I honestly don't see a problem :)

For the song contests, I think is normal for the long waits, due to: trying to reach the maximum number of participants (not eveyone is here all the time); giving time for choosing a song to send (this will take time depending on your available time for it, and on the number of jurys your nation has because you have to reach some agreement); giving time for listening to ALL the songs; to allow the host to organize everything.

I have only been in the previous contest, but I prefer a long wait and then have such a well organized event! :)

And about "no posting", I thing that's proportional to the sport events happening and the interest of the users. In my case, for instance, this year's beggining my only interest was - apart from football in my country's national league and in champions league - in Track Worlds, and the next one in my watch list are the Golf's majors in April (in women and men), so I have nothing to say :p

I expect though that starting this Summer, and with the Olympics getting closer, more activity from everyone will happen :)

I agree that forum should be more dynamic, but also as kungshamra wrote, if I don't have to write anything, then why should I?

If someone likes to write, then let him/her be creative and write about some interesting stuff when there are less (important) sport events or other side activities on the forum. Opening "2012 medalists failed to qualify for Rio" thread is an excellent example how to gain attention.

Besides, I am doing everything in my power to keep tennis subforum alive, 90% of posts are mine lol

    • Oh the Tour de Ski Overall counts as well? That would explain the discrepancies then .   I'm sure Brazil will be in the top 30 in the end given the top 3 athletes are scored and they have better depth than some of the countries at the bottom of the rankings.
    • Awesome, thanks! I've been tracking the women's list as well (because of Brazil, obviously), and I believe I have some different numbers. I'll post it later, because I am very curious where I made some mistakes.   You counted the Tour de Ski overall standings for example, I think? I hadn't done that yet, but started realizing I probably need to.   Still in time, since only from today on (with the junior sprint) it starts to get real interesting in terms of the top-30 and so a potential extra Olympic ticket     As for Brazil, it'll mostly be interesting to see if their 2 junior girls, 3 U23 girls and 3-4 women at the world championships (including a team sprint and relay) will beat out Taipei, Andorra and Armenia, who have 1 athlete who is better than every Brazilian, but don't really have a 2nd, let alone a 3rd athlete. I'd have to consult my other list, but off the top of my head other countries to look out for should be Argentina, Croatia, Great Britain, Spain (unless they decide not to focus on it, which I think might be the case given that their best competed at home yesterday and aren't in Schilpario) and a few others.   Also, China will absolutely be on this list. They started the season with no FIS points at all, I guess hadn't competed since Beijing, but already destroyed the points for a few races in Norway (by being in the top-5 while not having any FIS points). Their absence in recent years means they'll compete in the qualifying 7.5k in Trondheim in the world championships, since they don't qualify directly, which then will mean they'll destroy the points there as well, like Baiba Bendika did in Oberstdorf (which led to FIS changing it's qualifying rules ).   Oh well, interesting weeks ahead, I already can't count the number of hours I have spent on this (rankings, calculations, and so on) both on my laptop and in my mind!
    • My conclusion for this tournament:   Best team   Exceptional performance     Worst performance     Weak teams who did better than expected     unlucky teams
    • Cross-Country Skiing NOC Quota Standings as of February 2nd   These are the quotas that get allocated to NOCs after the basic quota (1 male + 1 female) is allocated to NOC's who have athletes that have the required amount of points. These standings are NOT the same as the World Cup Nations Cup. The Nations cup only gives points to the top 30 athletes in a race while the Olympic rankings give points to every athlete which partakes in a race and also includes World Championships and World Junior Championships results. I attempted to calculate the standings using this document as I don't believe the list has been made public yet.   4 quotas 3 quotas 2 quotas 1 quota   Men   Rank NOC Points 1 Norway 13185 2 Sweden 9254 3 France 8930 4 Finland 7746 5 United States 7291 6 Italy 6442 7 Germany 6336 8 Switzerland 6145 9 Czechia 4144 10 Canada 4037 11 Austria 4035 12 Great Britain 3434 13 Slovenia 3164 14 Estonia 3007 15 Australia 2129 16 Japan 1587 17 Latvia 1568 18 Poland 1441 19 Kazakhstan 1246 20 Andorra 1170 21 Spain 1170 22 Ireland 1161 23 Hungary 812 24 Ukraine 712 25 China 621 26 Thailand 336 27  Armenia 276 28 Romania 266 29 Slovakia 217 30  Bulgaria 193 31 Mongolia 137 32 Serbia 131 33 Argentina 118 34 Korea 115 35 Croatia 97 36 Chile 80 37 Colombia 76 38 North Macedonia 47 39 Lithuania 47 40 Belgium 45 41  Liechtenstein 39   Women   Rank NOC Points 1 Norway 12310 2 Sweden 10634 3 Finland 9539 4 Germany 9529 5 United States 8562 6 Switzerland 6329 7 France 5039 8 Italy 4680 9 Canada 4533 10 Czechia 4298 11 Austria 3636 12 Estonia 2190 13 Slovenia 1885 14 Kazakhstan 1677 15 Ukraine 1304 16 Australia 1203 17 Poland 588 18  Japan 510 19 Latvia 442 20 Chinese Taipei 194 21 Andorra 183 22 Armenia 131 23 Korea 122
    • That's good, and looking down on that page it seems like it will be available to watch on-demand as well. Which I think is arguably even more important for a streaming platform and which is why YouTube usually beats out every other way of live streaming
    • They did, and so did their Pairs figure skating team and speed skater.
    • A close match nonetheless!  gets their men's ice hockey campaign off to a successful start in Group B.
    • Uzbekistan may be able to get a medal in short track. I believe both of their athletes used to compete for Russia.
    • And competition has officially started.
    • End of an era 🫡   (being a *bit* tongue in cheek here :P )
