The turning point of portuguese football started with their 1989 & 1991 youth world cup wins. That generation of Figo, Rui Costa, etc. Before that they had only produced elite players very sporadically (and even the greatest, Eusebio, grew up in Mozambique).

If Iran really want to withdraws, so why should Italy take their place instead of another team from the Asian zone? Europe has 16 spots and won't get a single more. Besides, I personally wouldn't want to qualify for the World Cup through the back door.

both have millions of spectators but OG is multi sport , easy to qualify somewhere
