european juniors, worlds, university games just gone and now this new event in less than a month?

frankly, the swimming governing bodies are going a bit too far, imho

however, from an Italian perspective, this competition might get a lot of hype because of the announced comeback by Lorenzo Galossi, after a year full of troubles (mononucleosis and cytomegalovirus all together, 2 changes of coach, a lot of doubts going through his mind)

let's see how he does this weekend? I'm really curious and I hope he's at least in decent shape (not expecting to be even close to his PBs, but at least swimming reasonably fast)

I don't agree that FINA is going too far. I think this is a very good event. It helps to keep athletes engaged/motivated who are too old for junior competitions and not (quite) good enough (yet) to qualify for senior competitions. I think athletes/coaches should focus on one event though. Also you forgot (to mention) that junior worlds are still to come ...

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

I'm not saying that this is a useless event by itself...

I'm just saying that there should be some interval between the main competitions, since in swimming it's quite normal being very competitive at a young age

if all the events are held basically at the same time, they are all going to be somehow not as good and competitive as they might be if they were better spread through the year

Before someone inevitably asks when did the US and South Africa become part of Europe, LEN is allowing one nation from each of the other continents to participate. However, nobody from Asia or Oceania wanted to participate.

Yeah, looking at the start lists, I noticed a few swimmers who competed in both Worlds and WUGs already. That's a lot of competition in 3 weeks

Strange competition to introduce. Ireland will have its three Olympic qualified swimmers at it as it’s their home event, but they aimed for the world champs so will be interesting to see what shape they’re in. Wiffen will be disappointed if he doesn’t win two gold anyway

A number of different countries seem to be approaching with different aims, which will, counterintuitive, make it difficult to gauge what any result here means. But any new competition has to start somewhere, I suppose.

Galossi :yikes: 1.51.9 over 200m free :hairpull:

we've officially lost our best talent, the man who should have led the transition from the current generation to the next...:drama:

I don't see him recovering from such a low point, I think he didn't used to swim so slow even when he was 12/13

    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
    • The worst editions in XXI century for us were Vancouver: 5 medals (only 1 gold for Razzoli's on the penultimate day) and Sochi: 8 medals (but no gold). Turin was already a prelude to this bad period, although the number of gold medals was ok. Overall we won fewer medals at home than in 2002 and this was probably the only case in the 21st century when the host country won fewer medals at home than 4 years earlier, either in summer or winter. In general the years 2008-2016 were very bad in our sport, both in summer and winter. Only 2018 in Korea was a slight rebuild + 2 fantastic summer editions in Tokyo and Paris. in Beijing 2022 we won a lot of medals - 17 but only 2 gold (If it weren't for Gogga's injury, I think it would have been 4 gold).
    • Totallympics had  users at one point, but I haven't seen any hanging around in a while.
    • In terms of total medals, yes. In terms of golds, I’d be fine with anywhere from 6-8.   @intoronto you don’t think we’ll do better or at least the same? Bit surprising.
    • Tadeucci was very good and took bronze
    • On the Olympics I don't like to count golds to analyse the performance, I think the best data are the top8 and medals. In both fields I expect a big improvement (obviously not on the 'pure' number, but on the percentage of medal or top8 events)
    • December is probably going to be focused on either Italy/Austria or Norway, but the plans are still being made as we speak. Renting a car, driving from the Netherlands down to Italy, finding accomodations and help with preparing the skis and all that...trying to make it as an independent 'solo' athlete is...hard     I can't go and help out, because we got the keys to our house (finally) and there's lots of work to be done there, so it's all happening at the same time and the mind is getting crazy (for both of us)
