Why did they need to remove anything? I don’t remember any quota reductions for figure skating.

ISU overall had a quota reduction of 4, 2 in FS and 2 in SS

And the stupidity began… just reduce the hotel stars the IOC members require to hook up with prostitutes, and costs should reduce 30% or more

The slightly updated qualification system for cross-country skiing has been doing the rounds amongst athletes, but I can't find it online anywhere yet (like on FIS' website), any idea where to look?

Don't have it at hand right now, but I believe the main thing in terms of eligibility for athletes is being under 300 (men) or under 350 (women) FIS points at the 2025 world championships, which I think is a change specifically for the women.

There's been massive discussion about this system for a while now, especially about the eligibility only coming from a single event (like, you qualify at the world championships or not at all).

If you'd like to help our fellow Totallympics member Bruna Moura get to the 2026 Winter Olympics, after her car crash on the way to the 2022 Olympics, every tiny bit of help would be greatly appreciated! Full story and how to help can be found here!

Cross Country skiing, change from 300 to now 350 FIS points as the max. Though the paragraph says 300, the chart shows 350 :dunno: No change in quota

Freestyle skiing: No change in quotas

Hockey

Luge: Each singles event loses 10! quotas and the men's doubles loses a sled. This creates an additional 22 quotas, which will be used for the women's doubles event.

Nordic combined max number of athletes per NOC dropped from 5 to 3 (2 really)

Ski jumping: Quota is gender equal (65 men to 50 men from 2022 to 2026, and 45 women in 2022 to 50 women in 2026). For men's a country must have 4 skiers in the top 25 allocation list to qualify the maximum 4 jumpers.

Snowboarding: Quotas remain the same from Beijing, but the number per NOC drops to max 13 per gender (from 14). Also it looks like a country can enter 3 SBX teams, I believe it was 2 in 2022.

All the systems (except alpine skiing) are now available on the IOC's website.

Alpine skiing qualification system was approved today: Link

There were no changes to the overall quota from 2022, but there was a pretty significant change in the FIS Points needed to qualify in Giant Slalom and Slalom…

2022: 160.00
2026: 120.00

It will be interesting to see how this affects overall participation at the Games.

NOCs will be allowed a maximum of 4 teams per gender in the combined events.

    • yeah I know    I mean it wasn't a different team specific for that sport. it was the same CC team participating in both sports.
    • It is run by a different federation though
    • from what I heard , Iran has registered to participate in Alpine, CC skiing, SkiMo, Skating (they didn't mention which discipline ) and ... (this one will be surprising ) ... Curling    Curling is not a sure thing yet, the NOC has to approve it. the team is very new. I mean very very new, only few months ago they gathered few people to start the sport  you can't lose 100-0 in Curling, right ?    anyway it will be first time ever Iran participating outside of FIS disciplines. ( I didn't count Ski orienteering in 2011 which was the same as CC)   nobody cares about winter sports here. therefore finishing last won't have consequences. they can afford sending very weak teams. (which is not the case for the main Asian Games)

    • 11 medals out of 15 athletes. for whatever reason  we sent an incomplete team of 16 athletes (only 1 left for tomorrow) I wish I knew why  I can guess though   the result is indeed very good in such a competitive sport but lack of talent was never our problem in taekwondo. it was always there probably much more than any other country.    but the problem is the transition to the senior team. most of previous junior world champions never even made the senior team. (the new federation is doing better in this regard though)
    • Maybe my analogy was bad. I meant a team points competition based on individual placements in each event.
    • But why? Honestly it should be about athletes.
    • I actually feel like it has the potential to be good change. The new brand identities might open up more possibilities for merchandise. I also think the ISU could create a compelling team standings competition similar to the constructors cup in F1.   Plus, it might add a degree of “apolitical-ness” to the top level international short track, during a time where that’s been a hot topic in international sports (in general).    Maybe it won’t work at all, but I’m open to seeing where the ISU go with this.
