Athletics at the European Games 2023

To be fair, we lost valuable points elsewhere. But it is really sad, they could not give poor Vid Botolin that 1 point, he still managed to finished the 5000 m race, no matter what.

Really nice gesture from Croatian athlete. :champion:

Congrats :LTU , we will miss you in this totallympics thread, return soon among us. :p

Hard luck :SLO

Yeah, we will be away from the usual fun banter, but at least you'll have Ireland back :p

We are probably gonna get rolled like kids, but it is still going to be absolutely amazing to see us fight in the 1st division.

What else can I say? @Bearas,  @Werloc & co., congrats to your team.

It could not got any closer, heart broken. :(

It really does indeed depend on every single little detail.

I literally thought it was over when our pole vaulter had an NM, but lots of brilliant Lithuanian performances from today brought us back into contention.

Or perhaps you want to join us in the first league?

We'll relegate the Germans, Italians and Poland in 2025, see you in 2027 maybe? :d

Decent chance for Edis Matusevičius to stay in a medal position with his 84.22 in the javelin.

Somewhat of a chance for Gudžius in Discus Throw and Karinauskaitė in 3000m Steeplechase.

Other Lithuanians that are still in top three currently: Morauskaitė in 400m, Vadeikis in Long Jump, Truskauskas in 200m, Galvydytė in 1500m, Zarankaitė in Discus Throw, Petrokaitė in Long Jump and the women's 4x100m

I skimmed through the 1st division entry list, and it's safe to say, barring a miracle of some sort, that only the first three athletes have chances retaining their positions, but those that are in the top three currently are still going to have a very solid finish.

I don't know, a couple of years ago our women's hammer throw was 40 metres, our pole vault was 3.10 and 4.40 respectively. We didn't have any decent male runners in 400m (our 4x400m relay was a laughing stock) and longer distances.

Hurdles used to be questionable, weak men's triple jump. Somehow we found a way to make things work.

I miss us being a threat in 100 metres though.

We have some very talented juniors coming through, but two of the guys are not progressing this year and one girl stopped progressing after various injuries. But perhaps we'll see them in 2025 if things turn around for the better.

    • For the summary and lowlights of Thailand's preparation in hosting the ongoing Sea Games, I kindly suggest those who are interested to read from this English language article from Thai media outlet, Thai Enquirer: https://www.thaienquirer.com/63469/thailands-sea-games-2025-under-fire-budget-management-and-technical-controversies/
    • It's all hogwash especially in the short attention span generation. Like nobody cares about Free Tibet anymore either. Free Palestine will last a lot longer due to Saudi Arabia becoming a sponsorship force in sports.   Israel is too weak in soccer to qualify from UEFA zone. The only time they qualified was from the Asian zone and they only beat Australia & New Zealand who were complete nobodies in the 1960s. No such luck in the 60 years since.
    • Oh I assure you FIFA dodger a bullet with Israel not qualifying…   But ya that’s kind of the thing, shut up and dribble is a mantra anti LGBT people have used often. I don’t think it’s hypocritical to remind them of their position
    • Ah, yes but that's not how pro athletes are taught in North America these days? Shut up & dribble is xenophobic, racist or whatever? The hypocrisy of some of these policies were exposed during 2022 World Cup already where the Saudis played it smart and waved their own "Free Palestine' slogans. Forget LGBT rights for a moment, how many 'Free Palestine' flags will be waved in 2026? Or will those be confiscated by default? Somehow I feel this won't be met with similar backlash when China clamped down on 'Free Tibet' in 2008 OG. Saudi Arabia is more important to global markets than Iran & Egypt
    • Wisła Płock just assumed 1st position after five consecutive draws. Must be first time ever a team on a five match winless streak actually moves up to league top.
    • Well ya, which is why the Egyptian and Iranian teams can shut up and dribble :P
    • The problem is, the World Cup is not a local event. Overall it's another storm in a teacup. LGBT rights in Muslim countries won't change a damn inch becuse of one soccer match in Seattle
    • After looking at the entry list of athletes in the official website, I've changed some of my predictions in the Olympic events with these changes:   Total Tally: Thailand 87, Singapore 51, Vietnam 48, Indonesia 33, Philippines 24, Malaysia 22, Cambodia 1     Badminton (5): Malaysia 2, Thailand 1, Singapore 1, Indonesia 1   Men’s Singles: Switched from Thailand to Singapore     Boxing (11): Thailand 8, Philippines 2, Vietnam 1   Men: -54 kg (-55 kg): Thailand, -60 kg: Thailand, -63.5 kg (-65 kg): Thailand, -69 kg (-70 kg): Thailand, -80 kg: Philippines   Women: -50 kg (-51 kg): Thailand, -54 kg: Thailand, -57 kg: Thailand, -60 kg: Vietnam, -66 kg (-65 kg): Thailand, -70 kg: Philippines     Sailing (7): Thailand 4, Singapore 2, Malaysia 1   ICLA 6: Switched from Thailand to Malaysia     Taekwondo (8): Thailand 6, Vietnam 2   -67 kg: Switched from  Vietnam to Thailand     Weightlifting (5): Thailand 2, Philippines 1, Indonesia 1, Malaysia 1   Men: -65 kg: Malaysia, -94 kg (-95 kg): Thailand   Women: -53 kg: Thailand, -69 kg: Philippines, -77 kg: Indonesia   * I saw that they have actually change the weight categories to almost match that of IWF newly introduced categories from several months ago.      Wrestling (12): Vietnam 7, Philippines 3, Indonesia 2   Men's Freestyle: -57 kg: Philippines, -65 kg: Vietnam, -74 kg: Vietnam, -86 kg: Philippines Men's Greco-Roman: -67 kg: Indonesia, -77 kg: Vietnam, -87 kg: Indonesia, -97 kg: Vietnam Women's Freestyle: -50 kg: Vietnam, -53 kg: Vietnam, -57 kg: Vietnam, -62 kg: Philippines
