interesting results for the men's epee in terms of Olympic qualification...

:FRA France are still on top and they will stay on top also at the end of today's event...moreover, they're going to increase their margin over their opponents, as they are already qualified to today's Gold Medal match...

:ITA Italy, who are France's opponents in today's Final, are the biggest climbers of the week, jumping from 7th to a sure top 4 place at the end of the day...

on the other side, :RUS Russia are the biggest losers, as they are scheduled to play for 13th or 14th place today and they will go down in the ranking from 4th to 7th (but they would still keep a qualifying spot as the best European team outside the top 4, as those teams are all from Europe)...

here are the current projected rankings, before today's finals...

:FRA France  255/267
:SUI Switzerland  200/202
:UKR Ukraine  187/191

:ITA Italy  188/200
:CHN China  174/176
:KOR South Korea  170/172

:RUS Russia  165/166
:JPN Japan  156/162

:HUN Hungary  140/141
:USA United States  138/139
:KAZ Kazakhstan  127/128
:DEN Denmark  122/123
...
:EGY Egypt  95/96 (still safe in the top 16)

and here is the updated OQR after today's event...

1. :RUS Russia 286 (Q)
2. :KOR South Korea 224 (Q)
3. :FRA France 208 (Q)
4. :ITA Italy 202 (Q)

5. :UKR Ukraine 180 (Q as the best European team outside the top 4 overall)
6. :HUN Hungary 173
7. :CHN China 172 (Q as the best Asian team outside the top 4 overall)
8. :USA United States 171 (Q as the best Panamerican team outside the top 4 overall)

9. :JPN Japan 147
10. :POL Poland 127
11. :ESP Spain 124
12. :GER Germany 120
13. :CAN Canada 117
14. :TUN Tunisia 107 (Q as the best African team outside the top 4 overall)
15. :TUR Turkey 105
16. :AZE Azerbaijan 99
17. :VEN Venezuela 94

as Italy are only a bunch of chokers, despite the 29 point-margin they still have over Hungary, there's a good chance we're going to have some dramatic final events for what concerns the European continental spot, with Ukraine and Hungary probably taking over Italy before the end of the race...

at that point, our only hope to qualify to the Games is the unsportsmanlike hope that Tunisia drop out of the top 16, which is actually quite possible, as TUR, AZE and VEN, if they are going to start all the remaining competitions, have very good chances to sum up a loto more points than TUN and eventually end up in front of them...

we'll see...:mumble:

finally, some projected scores in women's team Foil before the finals are contested...

1. :RUS Russia 308/320
2. :ITA Italy 236/248
3. :USA United States 216/220
4. :FRA France 212/216
5. :JPN Japan 182/183
6. :CAN Canada 172/174
7. :KOR South Korea 154/155
8. :POL Poland 138/139
9. :CHN China 136/138
10. :GER Germany 135/137
11. :HUN Hungary 135/137
12. :HKG Hong Kong 120/121
13. :UKR Ukraine 111/112
14. :ESP Spain 107/108
15. :EGY Egypt 76
15. :SGP Singapore 76
17. :TPE Chinese Taipei 74/75
18. :AUT Austria 73
19. :BRA Brazil 72
xx. :ROU Romania 57/58

not much to say in this case...the only big question is: "will at the end of race Egypt still be among the top 16?"...

my guess is "no", which means that probably we're going to see 1 more good team (KOR rather than another European one) among the Olympic participants instead of the very weak Egyptians...

as written before, the real fight is Egypt's to stay within the top 16, which imho is unlikely...with 3 WC stages still to go, should they participate, all the 5 more dangerous followers could easily make up the current deficit from the African champions...

meanwhile the battle for the European Continental spot is really hottin'up: POL, GER and HUN are really close and 2 of them would eventually have to watch the Games on TV (even if Egypt fail to qualify and open the race for a reallocation spot, KOR are heavily favourite to grab it, I don't see the European teams taking over the Koreans)...

    • I read now that Valentina Rodini will be in the new team of Tizzano + Galtarossa and Martini. I was probably in such an information bubble on Instagram that I thought that only Abbagnale was running a campaign and had a team of people around him. That's why I was surprised by his defeat + the fact that, for example, Rodini supports his rival. But as I wrote, for me the change in the general coach position is a plus. We need a new opening and a new impulse: Cattaneo had his best results in Tokyo and then he only explained that his rowers were running away abroad to the USA to study and that's why he had worse results. Ok, except that it's the same in Romania and Greece but they results are comparable or better. It's obvious that no one here will make the UK or the Netherlands, because we don't have such resources and money but I think we can repeat the Romanian results (2 gold - 3 silver in Paris) and that will be a much better result than the 2 silver in this year.
    • Abbagnale boasted that he had 80 per cent a few days before the vote (I still have the screen) and ran again as a result of a power deal. Not a great loss.   I have doubts about the new technical director though, you can't announce him during the congress, brandishing the scalp of the Abbagnale era technical staff (who then, were Crispi's men). Let's hope there are no rifts between the new staff and the athletes, it had to be handled better.
    • I was surprised by Abbagnale's defeat. I thought he was a sure of victory, since he decided to run - I read some source that he didn't know if he would start before Paris 2024. What do you think about it?

    • Cattaneo was good but his peak was in Tokyo 2021. Then there was such stabilization - stagnation. In Paris the result was in line with expectations but without the wow effect. They threw everything that was best into the quadruple sculls and it was enough for a only silver. Now without the lightweight sculls in LA I think that radical changes are needed to remain competitive. Previously there was a 3-year Olympic cycle due to Covid, so big changes weren`t good but now I think the time is right. Although of course more funds are needed for this sport in Italy, because even the best coach will not overcome this vel our men`s alpine skiing sector
