International Olympic Committee News

Out of all the sports rumored to be cut the only ones I would be fine with removing (Even though they should stay) are Modern Pentathlon, race walking, squash and eventing. Flag football and lacrosse are sports I personally like but there isn't enough global popularity to stay in my opinion.

Baseball, Softball, Cricket and Canoe slalom are sports that should 100% be at the games but I understand if they are cut from games where there is not a good venue available.

What is the consequence of the discipline re-aligment, other than cosmetic? I mean, does it really matter if someone competes in slopestyle and big air as separate disciplines or if the little tag they put on them are 'events' instead if 'disciplines'?

Kind of dumb if race-walking is in trouble while the cost of venues is a thing. You literally only need about a kilometer of already existing road, perhaps two (it should be more, but yeah).

Like I say, in the Olympic context it has meaning in terms of the numbers of athletes competing and the medals given.  Conspiracy theory:  the IOC is doing it to make it more likely that federations will cut their OWN sports by setting up a  rivalry between say, canoe slalom and canoe sprint, or pool swimming and open water swimming etc etc.

Artistic swimming and Rhythmic gymnastics could survive because the venues are already going to be used for something else. Same with Greco Roman.

Mountain Biking might be one in danger. Another sole venue discipline.

But there's a difference between an expensive venue that needs to be built up entirely for one sport, or a sport that has a sole venue but a venue one doesn't need to construct from scratch, like mountain biking. I know they often do, but they don't need to build a whole track, the entire point of mountain biking is to go into the woods and mountains and stuff that's already there.

It's only important in so much as the discipline will be the unit they will use to evaluate what to keep or remove for the games. The fact that they separated race walking from the Marathon as a discipline is, to me, a sign that they are at least considering cutting race walking.

Likewise, it isn't an awesome sign for either aerials or snowboard Alpine to be separated from freestyle skiing and snowboarding.

Of coure it could mean nothing.

Splitting shooting in two is a big one. Suggests bug cuts there could happen.

I don’t really get your point?

I think open water swimming could go as well. Or maybe changed completely,

Anyway, in the end there are only going to be athletes who actually lose with all this. I might be happy to see sport X gone, someone else might be fine with removing discipline Y or whatever, but any decision to remove anything has a way bigger effect than us not seeing them on TV - in any sport there's the athletes whose dream is one day competing in the Olympics and they will not just see a decision and think "aw, now I won't see that", but basically see one of their biggest life goals shattered by some people's decisions.

It needs no explanation that sports where this is not an issue, so where the Olympics are not the main event, can safely be cut from the program.

Well, the IOC could say to World Aquatics,  you can only have all those dozens of Pool Swimming relay events, if you agree to get rid of the Open Water events.  Then of course World Aquatics will listen to their sponsors and say "keep the relays" and the IOC gets rid of Open Water without having their fingerprints on the dagger.

Splitting shooting makes absolute sense. They could even easily have rifle and pistol as separate disciplines, but separating the indoor and outdoor events, which are just so absolutely different in every aspect, makes total sense.

Or, and just hear me out, we add a few relays - and the 50 meters - to the swimming program. That could be a nice way to mix things up and at the same time give swimmers a chance to showcase themselves a bit more than in the currently limited pool program.

    • Eventing for example has many supporters with tons of money and a lot of connections. It will fight for its future - it’s not going to just say that’s ok and toddle off. Sailing has that as well.    I could also see Eventing trying a new format that keeps it as mix of dressage and show jumping with maybe some sort of new third can that can be done in stadium.
    • Ya that requires a… finesse I’m not sure she has.
    • just found out there will be some from of qualification for the Taekwondo competition in Nagoya. only 16 athletes can participate in each event.   The Asian Championship in Mongolia this month will act as the sole qualifier   top 7 from each weight (Olympic and non-Olympic) + 1 host quota + 1 wildcard = 16 quarterfinal losers will be ranked based on their QF match result. (3 of them will qualify)   https://worldtkd.simplycompete.com/files/eventDocuments/0df00d4e-dcbe-4b3b-aa2d-ce573a202074.pdf
    • It could all go wrong when she has to explain why some sports are being cut after many many years. Baseball is the only one that ever has gone through that fully recently
    • But makes me thing one of them could go. Maybe the outdoor ones based on bigger venue costs.
    • Suspect that could backfire for the IOC.
    • She really needs to work on being (or at least sounding) less snarky / sarcastic, it has bitten her in the past and it will keep biting her if she doesn’t address it.   I think so far she’s been really bad at sounding conciliatory on controversial issues (whether it be Russia, Vladyslav Heraskevych or “women in sports”), but it’s too early to judge her on the changes she is making to the movement.
    • Or African. Or Asian. Or South/North/Central American.
    • Same as with every single IOC president, past and future, including any other candidate: not happy with it, because sports and events I like are being removed or cut to ridiculously small numbers, and that's never going to change     In terms of overall policies, they will all be the same: kind of flowing with the world's politics and trends. None of them are ever going to be amazing, none of them are ever going to be seen as great especially on a forum like this (besides maybe some in the past because there's always people thinking 'everything used to be better' ).
