Weightlifting are apparently changing their qualification from national team quota to individual qualifying, whilst reducing the max quota per nation to 8 athletes.

Hope the cut doesnt prevent smaller nations in Oceania from qualifying like they used to do

does it also mean they will allow one athlete per nation in each category?

I guess this will help the nations that have one good weightlifter instead of a team of mediocre ones (hello UAE women's team :p).

IAAF seems to completely change their qualification system. They will introduce a new World Ranking List which will be important for qualifying: https://www.iaaf.org/news/press-release/iaaf-official-world-rankings

Don’t like the sound of this. The rankings will give more points to certain events, but if the Diamond League (where certain athletes are invited, with many from the host countries) are given a high points weighting then that will corrupt the whole qualification system and seriously disadvantage athletes from smaller nations.

Rankings always put those with smaller resources in a disadvantage, and therefore should be avoided whenever possible...

Especially in sports like Athletics where there are many more competitions in Europe/North America than other parts of the world with a higher ranking status including the Diamond League, IAAF Label Road Races and combined event challenge.

basically it's always the same system as in the past 2/3 Olympics...

the difference is only in those individual places for smaller Nations lost because of the team events of the remaining disciplines are now been added to the program...

now there are really very few spots (only 10 in each discipline) for the athletes who don't have the full team qualified to the Games in their respective event...

for Italy is great to have now 12 instead of 10 chances to get a medal, but for the sport of fencing overall I think this is not good...actually, in my opinion it's a real mistake to have so few individual spots in each discipline...
