Supporting Small and Lesser Known Nations at the Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024

Recommended Posts

As promised I will update about my mother’s native country Syria :wSYR: in this thread.

But before looking forward to Paris 2024 I will tell you about little of Syria’s Olympic History.

Syria first participated in London 1948 when Zouheir Shourbagi was their sole competitor in the whole games. He get a 10th place in diving.

Syria has 4 Olympic medals in the history. 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze.

The Historical Gold is one of my favorite moments ever from the Olympic Games.

Ghada Shouaa won the gold medal in Heptathlon at the Summer Olympics Games in Atlanta 1996. My mom was proud, I was proud.

Syria‘s three other medalists are:

Joseph Atiyeh, silver in wrestling at Los Angeles 1984.

Nasser Al Shami, bronze in boxing heavyweight -91 in Athens 2004

Man Asaad, bronze in weightlifting +109 in Tokyo 2020(2021)

A woman won the only gold and that feels so good. The last medal came in the last Olympics in Tokyo. Can Syria :wSYR: win any medal in Paris? Let’s see and hope. More updates soon.

To add the Syrian Olympic Committee was created in 1948 and was also accepted by IOC in the same year. As I said 1948 was the year Syria debuted in Olympics games.

@Topicmaster1010 simulation:

:TAN Tanzania*: (+4)

Tanzania has two swimming universality quotas, 3 quotas in men's marathon, 1 quota in the women's marathon and a judo universality quota in the men's -66kg.

As not much is going on about Tanzania I think I will be involved in another NOC in this thread as well.

And it is :CYP CYPRUS

Cyprus had only one silver olympic medal - London 2012 - Pavlos Kontides - Sailing - M Laser

First of all, a big shoutout to Topicmaster's quota simulation, without which I would have no idea :wBAR:competed at a high level in surfing. The surfers in the linked article are the only athletes projected to make it to Paris (or in this case, Tahiti) outside of athletics and swimming for Barbados.

In the hope of breathing some more life into this thread, and reminding users it exists, I’m going to announce :PLW:MRI as my choices. I’ll provide some updates on their qualification efforts in the coming weeks.

:GUM Manami Iijima places 9th out of 16 at the Africa Triathlon Cup event at Swakopmund, Namibia.

Earlier this year, she participated at the Oceania Triathlon Cup race at Taupo, New Zealand where she took 12th out of 25 finishers.

Iijima has a World Ranking of 263 and is currently on the Start List for the next Africa Cup event in Zimbabwe on Saturday.

    • Yep. Not sure if it was the NOC or the biathlon federation (I assume the latter) that put him in the Livigno training 'world' with a former Italian biathlete as coach, but they can definitely also be blamed:  almost everyone involved in that shitshow got the motivation just sucked out of them by the methods and shitty atmosphere until they either retired or changed country

    • Lots of injuries, including often just pure bad-luck stuff like a fall from a set of stairs, illness, and of course the Sochi tragedy in 2014: one of her biathlon friends, young Julia Pieper, killed herself with a biathlon rifle early during the Olympics (she wasn't on the team, but was a training partner of both Preuss and Dahlmeier). Obviously a hard hit, which led to terrible Olympics for Preuss, with a DNF, awful results in her other individual races and a relay where she was the first runner for Germany, but fell early on, got snow in her rifle and broke a pole and ended up losing almost 3 minutes, which in turn resulted in Germany being off the podium for the first time ever.   After that came all the injuries and illness and everything. So glad to finally see her have her big individual global gold, that is so well deserved.
