When I think about Gunda Niemann or Daniela Anschütz, and Anni Friesinger(-Postma :p), I mostly just think about the good times of watching speed skating as a kid   Much like Gianni Romme, or Hiroyasu The Emperor Shimizu

Victoria Rodriguez is doing an excellent job in improving herself, again.

That time is under the Olympic standard. Maybe 2 South American countries in speed skating in Beijing

Except that Speed Skating is expecting a hard quota cut from the ISU :(

At the first Junior World Cup weekend of this year, some highlights for me:

  • :COL Diego Amaya and :ESP Nil Llop were the two best male skaters in their age category (B2 = born in 2003) in the men's 1.000m. Amaya finished in 11th place behind 10 juniors all at least one year older, but most of them two years older. So that's a good thing. Llop finished in 11/59 in the 500m
  • :POL Szymon Wojtakowski is also a very exciting prospect, born in 2005 finishing 15/60 on the same 1.000m for boys, in 1.15.21, which is an impressive time for a 14 year old on an outdoor rink.
  • On the womens side, I noted more and more skaters from non-traditional speed skating countries such as :FRA :CZE :BEL and especially :ESP. If the Spanish skaters keep progressing, we might see a solid Spanish team pursuit / team sprint team in the future.
  • On the girls' side, :NED  is (too) dominant, winning all events, on the men's side :JPNhad the highest number of podium places and wins, even in the longer distances.

Wojtakowski will be too young for the youth Olympics, and actually becuase of the way the ISU creates their age criteria, he will never compete at a Winter Youth Olympics (which absolutely defeats the entire purpose of such an event)

For those interested, second of four stages in the Dutch Trachitol Cup, a sort of stage race with four marathons (AKA real mass starts).

Shani Davis is back in the world of speed skating...he's a coach for China, training young short track skaters to go to the long track version and win medals in 2022 :cheer:

Dutch NOS had a chat with him at the Junior World Cup in Enschede this weekend, if the video works outside of the country, you can watch it here:

https://nos.nl/video/2311881-shani-davis-duikt-op-in-enschede-altijd-blij-in-nederland-te-zijn.html

Also: that's the first time he has actually said he is retired. He didn't skate anymore after Pyeongchang (they show part of what we now know is his final race), but had never officially retired. Something the reporter says in Dutch at the end will always hold very true though: "Davis likes the Netherlands and Dutch habits and the Netherlands likes Davis. It used to be like that, it still is like that and it will always be like that."

I don't think Horngacher will force him to withdraw.
