Yep, took me until today to work out what they were playing at, as it is so bad for the publicity for the event for all the home stars not to attend. Barclay Izzards 8th will come as a pleasant surprise to selectors, and the relay result today was spectacularly unexpected. If GTB gets back to health, GBR can give the French a run for their money. If not, the French will walk out. Interesting that the next female Brit off the rank, Kate Waugh, has made a great start to her career, yet the cupboard remains bare for the men...

Connor Bentley is probably their next big hope - he was the Under 23 World Champion last year - although has been a bit underwhelming on the main tour this year, finishing outside the top 30 at European Games but he does have European Cup level wins in 2023.

:GBR Barclay Izzard finally records a decent individual result in a WTCS event! (Even if it is probably one of the weakest lineups we've seen in a while)

With Brownlee slipping down the rankings, if Izzard backed this up with a good Finals result, GBR could be left with an awkward problem re relay.

I suppose not everybody can be a Yee or an Ali Brownlee, in terms of early breakthrough - GTB wasn't particularly young when she came through, and Potter has surged quite late. The big disappointment for me (apart from Ireland not having an elite triathlete worth a damn right now) is Ben Djikstra, who had Yee-like early signs but just never broke through. One probably shouldn't be greedy - for the Brownlee generation to get followed up by Yee is more than most nations could hope for - Australia, for example, must sometimes wonder what the hell happened! (I've jinxed it now, and the Aussies will find a raft of superstars in the next six months!)

Well, this isn't very good.

Health chiefs are investigating after triathletes reported falling ill after taking part in the World Triathlon Championship Series in Sunderland.

Concerns were raised around water quality results for a test taken on 26 July by the Environment Agency, which showed high levels of E.coli.

Not really surprised by this - there were a lot of substitutions made ahead of the mixed relay because of sickness.

Pontevedra is obviously going to be important to determine the World Champion, but there's not that many athletes who are realistically in contention - for many the main focus is going to be on securing Olympic selection.

:AUS - Australia

Criteria 1: Top-8 finish at Paris Olympic Test Event. (Not Achieved)

Criteria 2: One athlete will secure selection if they finish in the top-8 at Pontevedra.

Criteria 3: Any athlete who achieves a top 5 finish at designated WTCS sprint event or top-8 finish at Olympic distance designated WTCS event. Designated events will take place between March and May next year.

Likely Selection - Matthew Hauser best placed to secure nomination at Pontevedra but unlikely that anyone on the women's side will make the necessary grade.

:NZL - New Zealand

Criteria 1: Top-3 finish at Paris Olympic Test Event. (Not Achieved)

Criteria 2: Two or more top-8 placings at either Paris Test Event or WTCS event during qualification.

Criteria 3: Selectors discretion.

Likely Selection - Hayden Wilde has already met criteria 2 so he will be going all out for World title.

:CAN - Canada

Criteria 1: Top 5 finish at Paris Olympic Test Event or at WTCS Final at Pontevedra.

Criteria 2: Two top-12 finishes at WTCS event or Paris Olympic Test Event.

Criteria 3: Requires a top-12 finish at WTCS event and top-8 finish within mixed relay event.

Criteria 4: Discretionary nomination based on Individual Olympic Ranking.

Likely Selection - Tyler Mislawchuk has already met criteria 2 but a top-5 finish in Pontevedra would seal his place.

:USA - USA

Criteria 1: If 2 athletes secure podium finish at Paris Olympic Test Event, both will be nominated. Taylor Knibb selected.

Criteria 2: If an athlete secures podium finish at Paris Olympic Test Event and another athlete secures top-8 finish, both athletes will be nominated.

Criteria 3: A single athlete finishing within the top-8 at Paris Olympic Test Event will be nominated. Morgan Pearson selected.

Criteria 4: An athlete who secures podium finish at Pontevedra will secure nomination.

Criteria 5: An athlete who secures podium finish at designated WTCS event in 2024 will secure nomination.

Criteria 6: Discretionary selection

Likely Selection - Unlikely that any additional athletes will secure nomination for USA at Pontevedra but Taylor Spivey could just sneak on to the podium.

:GBR - Great Britain

Criteria 1a: Athletes securing podium finishes at both Olympic Test Event and Pontevedra will be nominated

Criteria 1b: If Alex Yee or Georgia Taylor-Brown secure podium place at Olympic Test Event and have achieved a podium at WTCS event, they will be selected. Alex Yee duly selected.

Criteria 2: Discretionary selection - athletes who have achieved at least 1 WTCS podium and are considered medal contenders.

Likely Selection - Beth Potter can secure nomination with a podium finish at Pontevedra. GTB and Sophie Coldwell both meet criteria 2

:GER - Germany

Criteria 1: Up to 2 athletes finishing in the top-8 at Olympic Test Event. Laura Lindemann selected.

Criteria 2: Up to 2 athletes finishing in the top-8 at Pontevedra.

Criteria 3: Finish in top-12 of WTCS standings.

Criteria 4: Discretionary selection.

Likely Selection - Lisa Tertsch on the women's side and both Jonas Schomburg and Lasse Luhrs would have potential to secure their nomination at Pontevedra.

:FRA - France

Criteria 1: Podium at Olympic Test Event - Dorian Coninx and Cassandre Beaugrand selected.

Criteria 2: Athletes finishing in the top 8 at Olympic Test Event and securing podium finish at Pontevedra will be nominated.

Criteria 3: Discretionary selection

Likely Selection - Emma Lonbardi has a top-8 finish at the Test Event as does Pierre Le Corre and Leo Bergere. If any of them finish on the podium this weekend, then they will be on the team.

:NOR - Norway

Criteria 1: Athletes with top-3 finish in at least 1 WTCS Olympic distance event between May-23 and May-24 will be selected.

Criteria 2: Based on Individual Olympic Ranking list.

:ESP - Spain

Criteria 1: Any athlete with a top-8 finish at Olympic Test event will be selected.

Criteria 2: Any athlete within the top 12 of the Individual Olympic Ranking at 31-Dec-23 will be selected.

Criteria 3: Discretionary selection.

Likely Selection - Antonio Serrat Seoane would currently be selected under criteria 2.

:JPN - Japan

Criteria 1: Highest ranked athlete in the Individual Olympic Ranking will be selected provided they are within the top-20 of the ranking.

Criteria 2: Athletes finishing within the top-8 at the Olympic Test Event, Pontevedra WTCS final or WTCS race in Yokohama in 2024 will be selected.

Likely Selection - Kenji Nener is currently ranked 18th in Olympic ranking list and would be eligible for selection.

Yee & Wilde both mess up the swim, so the World Title is now wide open going into the run.

    • Well, I see that the national competition between mixed doubles and also men increased. Also actually amongst women, too. Before it was mostly Kubeskova team that participated in some international events. This year, Synackova team did really well in the pre-qualification just the final qualification was not that good. But curling is about details. Generally, I am glad to see that there is really much higher competition than it was 10 years ago. And seeing Chabickovsky a Zelingerova making it to the Olympics in such a young age can be really promising for their career as curling is becoming more professional, as we see Grand Slams and other big tournaments.    As for now, I think that in Milano Team Klima and mixed doubles can make really interesting results. After all, they will finish in top 10 so just qualifying to the Games is already a huge achievement

    • Tahli/Dean    Probably just as disappointed as the Australians on here are
    • Gotta feel for  defending world bronze medalists, but couldn't make it to the Olympics
    • with a steal of 3 in the 8th end,  can't make the last shot to stay alive.
    • Oh yea.  Seemed like they were starting to get some less than elite pitchers, but the commits they've had in the last 12 hours have been stellar.  Now the staff feels like an embarrassment of riches.  They have 3 elite starters and a bunch of guys that can eat innings.  Thrilled what Mark DeRosa has been able to put together.
    • It looks like you guys will be juuuuust fine.   Tarik Skubal, Logan Webb, Joe Ryan and Nolan McLean all committed within the last couple of days.
    • Yay for no disqualifications! Thanks @OlympicIRL for all the work! Getting close.
