Medalists at London 2012 not Qualified for Rio 2016

Recommended Posts

From Poland it are Przemysław Miarczyński and Zofia Klepacka, bronze medalists in sailing RS:X, they both failed in internal qualifications, instead them in Rio we will see Piotr Myszka and Małgorzata Białecka. Also Julia Michalska which was bronze medalist of women's double sculls in rowing also won't compete, after London she was pregnant and then was back to her "event" - single sculls. She retired after last year WC when she not qualified in that event.

Nothing is official yet but Cian O'Connor is very unlikely to be selected as our individual showjumper.... Bertram Allen is currently the favourite to get the selection and O'Connor would probably not even be second or third on the list in current form. Cian won a bronze medal in the individual showjumping at London 2012.

I also remember Krisztian Berki, the Hungarian gymnast. He's 100% out of Rio, isn't he?

You are right. He is 100% out of Rio!

Some athletes/teams who noone mentioned until now:

Athletics:

All russian medallists in athletics might miss the olympic games.

Björn Otto (silver in mens pole vault) is very unlikely to qualify. The same might be true for Hadadi (silver in mens discus throw).

I think Savinova/Poistogova (gold and bronze in womens 800 m), Alptekin/Bulut (gold and silver in womens 1500) are banned?

Basketball:

Russia (bronze in 2012) wont qualify in mens basketball.

Boxing:

Campbell (gold in 2012) turned pro, i dont know if he will try to qualify. The same is true for Nevin (silver in 2012), Ogogo (bronze in 2012), Joshua (gold in 2012).

Maybe there are other athletes who turned pro and wont try to qualify.

Slalom canoeing:

In slalom canoeing it could become very interesting, because only one athlete from each nation can qualify, so guys like Tasiadis (silver in 2012) or Aigner (bronze in 2012) might easily miss the olympics.

Track cycling:

Förstemann and Levy (both won bronze in mens team sprint in 2012 and Levy won silver in mens keirin) might very well not qualify.

Ed Clancy (bronze in mens omnium in 2012) also might miss qualification, Cavendish seems to be more likely to compete in mens omnium for GB. Clancy might compete in mens team pursuit instead.

Equestrian:

Langehanenberg won a silver medal in dressage team in 2012, but she wont qualify for Rio, the same probably will be true for Schneider, who was in the same team.

Fencing:

Germany won bronze in mens team foil, but didnt qualify for Rio. Joppich at least qualified individually. Japan won silver in London in mens team foil, but only Ota qualified this time.

Vezzali won bronze individually and gold in the team in London, but this time she missed qualification. Russia and South Korea won silver and bronze in womens team foil, but this time both nations were only allowed to qualify 2 athletes, so some of their medallists from 2012 will miss Rio, the same is true for mens sabre.

Swimming:

I think it will be pretty difficult for Cielo (bronze in 2012), Jamieson (silver in 2012) and Beisel (bronze and silver in 2012) to qualify.

Shooting:

Tons of athletes who won a medal in London and are young enough to still compete (and therefore probably didnt retire) didnt won a quota place for Rio (until now).

For example:

Cox, Narang, Moldoveanu, Tesconi, Zlatic or Rossi!

Tennis:

Sharapova (silver in womens single in 2012) might miss Rio.

Shooting:

Narang already qualified in the 50 m rifle prone, and Rossi will definitely compete for Rio 2016. In fact, Rossi has already been selected to the Italian team, so she's indeed safe. Moldoveanu is most likely competing for the Games, because Romania will have an opportunity to accept one of the unused berths from ISSF, and the NOC will definitely select him because of his outstanding feat from London 2012. The shooters who will be absent for the Games are the ff: Martynov (unless he is selected), Cox (no chance because Belgium has a quota in men's trap), Debevec, Tesconi, and Zlatic.

25m Rapid Fire Pistol silver medalist Vijay Kumar didn't win a quota for India.. He's struggling with form also.. So I don't see Indian NOC exchanging a quota for him

Will Narang also be allowed to compete in air rifle? Italy has only one quota place in womens trap and it was won by Stanco, so why will Rossi be allowed to compete instead of Stanco?

The quota places are directed to the NOC, not the athletes, so the NOCs have the option to select shooters at their own right. Stanco won the quota in the women's trap, but the Italian Clay Target Shooting Association picked Rossi to occupy the slot because she had a more outstanding feat throughout the qualifying period. Same case happened to the Americans. George Norton won the quota in the men's 50 m rifle 3 positions, but the place has been awarded to Matt Emmons instead because of the point system set by Team USA Shooting.

    • It’s honestly baffling how bad she was in 2018. Just absolutely lost her head. Real shame too because she is so gifted. I do hope Li Jianrou sends her a Christmas card every year tho, she was absolutely gifted a gold medal by Christie in 2014.
    • Oh I’m not done yet, unfortunately. From the names that could be back but are still injured   Courtney Hoffos Mikael Kingsbury (should be back before the Olympics) Connor Howe (he returned, but nowhere close to his best so his injury is still giving him issues) Connor Bedard Meryeta O’Dine Megan Oldham
    • Italy also has its own list, although of course not every injury is as terribile  in terms of medal losses. In winter sports have unfortunately much more injuries than summer sports. In the summer only: cycling, volleyball and football.     - Brignone: will return in January, - Tabanelli: will return for the Olympics, - Bassino: season over, - Marta Rossetti: season over, - Lara Malsinier: season over.
    • TNT staff expect they will offer it at a price similar to what they offering the Winter Olympics for rather than the full TNT price.   But equally the main coverage is apparently going to be very different to what they do for the Olympics (Which is less pundits and studio chat than the BBC) with speculation it might be based on NBC’s Olympic coverage with tons of human interest etc.
    • India Sherret (ski cross)   Another name to the ever-growing list of injuries for the Canadian team… used to be excited for the Olympics, now not so much…
    • Voted  Thank you for extending the deadline and allowing me to vote once my exams are over. @OlympicIRL
