Canada advances to AmeriCup semi-finals with dominant win over Colombia

SANTIAGO, Chile (July 4, 2025) — Canada is through to the semifinals at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup following a 73–49 win over Colombia on Friday afternoon at the Centro de Deportes Colectivos.

With the result, Canada improved to 4–1 at the tournament and secured a semifinal berth for the ninth consecutive AmeriCup tournament.

Canada broke the game open in the second quarter, turning a seven-point lead into a 21-point advantage at halftime. The Canadians outscored Colombia 24–10 in the frame and never looked back. Despite shooting just 39 per cent from the field overall, Canada was efficient inside the arc (45.5 per cent) and at the foul line (84 per cent), while holding Colombia to 32 per cent shooting and zero second-chance points.

“We're excited about being able to move on to the next round and play in the semifinals,” said head coach Nell Fortner. “I thought our defence was pretty strong today. There are some areas we need to clean up, but we were locked in defensively. If we can smooth out the offence tomorrow, it’ll put us in a better position.”

Shay Colley led Canada with 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting from two-point range, while adding eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. She now has 212 career points at the Women’s AmeriCup, moving to sixth all-time among Canadians since 2003.

“I thought we did a great job as a team coming in and applying pressure, pushing the pace at the start of the game,” said Colley.

5th at the FIBA U19 Men’s World Cup!

Lost a tight game to US in the quarterfinals, they were down only one after three quarters, and lost by 6.

We got a bad draw. A team we beat in the group stage (Slovenia) finished higher
