Time clocking down...

60 minutes to the grand final

Both line-ups revealed

:FIN  Olkinuora - Lehtonen, Hietanen, Heiskanen, Pokka, Friman, Vatanen, Lindell, Ohtamaa - Granlund, Manninen, Hartikainen - Rajala, Filppula, Sallinen - Pesonen, Lammikko, Armia - Maenalanen, Bjorninen, Anttila

:CAN  Driedger - Chabot, Graves, Sanheim, Severson, Holden, Whitecloud, Mayo - Cozens, Dubois, Batherson - Sillinger, Barzal, Anderson - Comtois, Lowry, Roy - Johnson, Mercer, Gregor - 13th forward Geekie.

For the 3rd time in a row both teams will play the WCh final just like in Bratislava 2019 (FIN beat CAN 3-1) and in Riga 2021 (CAN beat FIN 3-2 after Overtime)

The reigning world champs Canada is chasing its 28th World Title, the reigning Olympic champions Finland aim for their 4th world title in history.

The home team Finns have a lot of motivation, because they have never managed to win gold medals at the home championship. The Finns entered the tournament very well, playing a total of nine matches, of which they lost only one, after penalty shoot-outs, to the Swedes 2:3. They have not yet lost in regular time. The Finns advanced to the quarterfinals from the first place with a record of 6 W - 1 L,

In Quarterfinals they were down 0:2 against Slovakia, but managed to turn the match around and win 4:2. In the semifinals, they met the Americans, they had to turn the game again. After being behind 0:1, but in the end they enjoyed a 4:3 victory.

Canada has a strong almost 100% NHL team at the World Champs (The only non-NHL player being O´Dell from Russian KHL). They passed the first four duels in the tournament without hesitation, but then lost to Switzerland 3:6 and then, surprisingly, for the first time in history also to Denmark. In the last match of the preliminary group, Canada returned to the winning wave, gave the French no chance and won easily 7:1.

Canada ran into Sweden in the quarterfinals. After two thirds, the score for the reigning champs was extremely unfavorable 0:3, but at the time the final buzzer was heard Canada managed to even the score to 3:3 and decided on its progress to the semifinals in the 43rd second of overtime. The Canadians were losing also against the Czechs, but managed to equalize and in the 2nd period retake the lead and subsequently the match was easily directed by them. Canada defeated the Czechs 6:1.

Interesting also to mention Valteri Filppula is the only one who can tonight enter the mega prestigious Triple Gold Club (players who won WCH, OG and NHL Stanley Cup) as first Finn in history, and overall the 30th player to reach this club

(There so far in the Triple Gold Club

11 Canadians:

Blake, Sakic, Shanahan, Niedermayer, Pronger, Staal, Toews, Bergeron, Crosby, Perry and Bouwmeester

9 Swedes:

Jonsson, Näslund, Loob, Forsberg, Lidstrom, Modin, Kronwall, Zetterberg and Samuelsson

7 Russian:

Kamensky, Gusarov, Fetisov, Larionov, Mogilny, Malakhov and Datsyuk

and 2 Czechs

Jágr and Šlégr)

Game Referees: Mikael Nord and Linus Ohlund (both :SWE )  Linesmen: Nick Briganti ( :USA ) and Šimon Synek ( :SVK Congrats Šimon, enjoy the final :yes )

    • There will be specialized double sculls...just not for an NOC if it is entering singles specialists.   Either enter 2 singles specialists, or 1 XD specialist pair.   But they can in theory compete in both events, I guess, if they qualify...our top M, I think, does both.   But there are 17M, 17W, and 30 Pairs allotted in the quota, so I don't think the intent is that every singles entry will be in doubles.   (Perhaps this gets to fall in line with Weightlifting, where due to max entry quota, an NOC can't enter in every event, even if they have the best athletes...here, unless you have a pair who qualifies in both.)
