Russia-Ukraine Crisis Consequences in Sports

Recommended Posts

Looks like 20 Russian/Belarus athletes have been cleared to take part in the Judo World Championships next week. There's essentially a full slate in the women's weight divisions but on the men's side, no competitors listed in the -60Kg and nobody in the -81Kg division either.

Apparently, an "independent, reputable company" was employed to perform background checks on all of the individuals to ensure there were no references to war propaganda.

Got to assume that we will be hearing about the withdrawal of the Ukrainian team before too long.

Such a strange decision so close to the championships, unnecessary backlash and drama caused. Maybe this is why we only took 13.

GB will likely withdraw soon as well.

Hopefully not taking away the chances of the Brits who do actually want to compete.

As expected, Ukraine withdraw from the Judo World Championships in protest at the inclusion of Russian/Belarussian athletes.

All Brits will have to go. It’s a betrayal of Ukraine to not do so.

Fencing, Judo and Wrestling. Ofc Russians return in the three sports where they have the most influence over the the international federation.

Also, apparently 6 of the Russian athletes allowed to compete at the Judo WCh are military personnel, which goes directly against IOC recommendations.

The IOC don’t care. They perfectly happy to have not just Ukraine boycott Paris.
