Biathlon IBU Junior & Youth World Championships 2022

Recommended Posts

Jakub Borguľa won completely unexpected silver also the 13th fastest skiing time (and 7th fastest shooting time overall, especially last clean standing in only 20.0 seconds) was not so bad...maybe there still a hope for our male biathlon

Also he just fullfiled the national funding criterias for Slovak Top Team Project, good for him

Campbell Wright might have blown his win 0 0 0 2.

Maybe he’s OK. His early speed is still the best & no-one else is shooting better.

And of course as soon as I type it Uldal :NOR goes faster.

Mareček :CZE also on the case.  Ski race between him & :NOR

Oof for a nightmare second looked like Zubarev :RUS was going to win.

Ivarsson :SWE 20/20, but down on ski speed.

Mareček surely won now.

US did decent.  Sure they shot terribly, but Bonacci missed 5 and was only 4:15 back.  Germain was 5:48 back but missed 7 shots and Bjorn Westvelt missed 10 shots and was 9:36 back.  Burkhart who shot the best was over 8 min back.

Cisar only the 4th best slovenian. Not surprising since he was transferred to the A team in the summer. Nobody does well in the A team.

Horrible performance by the german men today, the women were ok. Not sure who the best talent on the men's side is, but on the women's side it clearly is Michelon (who will be able to compete at junior level for two more years and already is at the top when it comes to skiing speed).

Some things i noticed while looking through past results:

- I would say roughly one third of the medalists at youth level become good at senior level

- Unsurprisingly (for people who follow biathlon) it usually takes many years (5+ years) for medalists at youth/junior level to become good at senior level, although of course there are exemptions (for example Davidova, Dahlmeier* or Öberg)

- Looking at the 2009 junior women's results is almost surreal and shows what an historic talent Miriam Gössner was: She finished 2nd in the sprint with 5 misses (8 seconds behind first place, the first and third placed athlete both had only 1 miss) and first in the pursuit with 8 misses (the second and third placed athlete had 7 misses combined)

- Looking at the result of men's junior sprint in 2009 is pretty crazy, the following athletes all finished top 16:

Hofer, Windisch, Weger, T. Boe, Schempp, Doll, Lesser, Beatrix, Semenov, Lapshin (pretty insane group for Germany)

* Looking at her junior results it had to be pretty clear that she was a special talent. She won a bronze at junior worlds in 2011 (roughly half a year after turning 17), the equivalent this year would be a girl born in August of 2004 winning a medal at junior level (while in reality the youngest medalist at youth level so far was born in August 2004). Of all the girls competing this year, Tannheimer from Germany is probably the closest, she had the 2nd fastest skiing speed in the individual and was born in August 2005.

    • Malinin  opted for the 4-Axel in his Short Program, but faltered, landing him in 3rd thus far (and only 0.05 away from 4th!).  Surely he has the tools to rise back up in the Free Program.  (Also, perhaps this will serve to show him that he is in fact beatable.)
    • I think they incorrectly translated Ukrainian word "nahorody" - it is not a full synonym of "medal". Its cocrrect translation is "award". Meanwhile russian tennis playes switched for Potapova ->  Rakhimova ->

I mean, it's not like the Ukrainian federation, or any single federation for that matter, has the power to strip her of her world and European championships medals I hope (not for her sake, but because that would be a super weird precedent)
