:AZE Baku Grand Slam

Day #2

:AZE Azeri athletes take it all in today's men's division: Hidayat Heydarov wins the -73kg and Saeid Mollaei triumphs in the -81kg, leading their Nation on top of the medal table with 3 Gold Medals in 2 days at the office.

Today's women's events were won by :ISR Inbal Shemesh (-63kg) and :NED Sanne Van Dijke (-70kg).

therefore, after 2 days of competitions, as I wrote before, :AZE Azerbaijan have 3 Gold Medals and 6 Nations follow with 1 Gold Medal each (:MDA:FRA:UZB:CAN:ISR and :NED).

Tomorrow the tournament will come to an end with the heaviest weight classes.

and later Today we're going to have a "classic" in the men's -81kg final: :BEL Matthias Casse vs :AZE Saeid Mollaei @MHSN

yeah, good for Marius Vizer, his prost.. won something

but Judo is probably the only Olympic sport that I almost don't follow at all. until September 2023 and most probably after .

I understand your POV, even if I'm sorry you don't follow Judo anymore...especially if it's because of that (very sad) story (and the consequence it has on the Iranian NT and Federation)...;)

:AZE Baku Grand Slam

Day #3

Finally, some full success also for :ITA Italy! :cheer:

Alice Bellandi, in fact, dominated the women's -78kg weight class.

the last women's event, the +78kg, instead, has been won by :SRB Milica Zabic.

:SRB Serbia was one of the most successful Nations earlier Today also among the men, thanks to Nemanja Majdov and Aleksandar Kukolj, who won silver in the -90kg and -100kg respectively, after beating in the semifinals their Italian rivals (Parlati and Pirelli).

today's men's Gold Medals went to :SWE Marcus Nyman (-90kg), :AZE Zelym Kotsoyev (-100kg) and :TJK Temur Rakhimov (+100kg).

This means that :AZE Azerbaijan won with quite some margin the final medal table with 4 Gold Medals, followed by 10 Nations with 1 Gold Medal each (:MDA:FRA:UZB:CAN:ISR:NED:ITA:SRB:SWE and :TJK).

:ITA Italy ended the tournament with 5 medals (1 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze), which is a very good result, even if we should carry home more regrets than joy, especially because of today's 2 losses in the semifinal matches in the men's -90kg and -100kg, bouts that our guys should have won quite comfortably, according to how things developed on the mat. but they both lost because of stupid mistakes.

:JPN Tokyo Grand Slam

last Grand Slam tournament of the season, before the closing Masters in a couple of weeks.

and, as expected, it was a true Japanese fest, with the hosts leaving the guest Nations only 2 out of 14 Gold medals (a very few silver and bronze medals, too).

the 2 "heroes" of the weekend are :KOR Jeon Seungbeom in the men's -60kg and :ITA Gennaro Pirelli in the men's 100kg (this is the first ever gold medal for an Italian Judo player in a top-tier tournament held in Japan :yikes: ).

in all the remaining weight classes, the home boys and girls didn't make any prisoner and just destroyed the rivals who made the trip (we have to admit that many Countries decided top send only a few athletes to Japan if not skipping the event entirely).

here you can find the Results Recap

    • I think you're doom spiraling too hard after just a few races...   Giacomel is very strong and I think that he might definitely land on a podium this season. The Italian women's team has a lot of very talented juniors that just need some time to grow. Dorothea Wierer also took her time to grow into her best form, so why is it not possible to give some time to the other talented athletes? Not everyone is bound to crush it at 21-23 y. o.
    • Of course they could make lineal world records, but they don't want that, because those records would never be beaten. And it's way more marketable, flashy etc. when you have "modern" WR and they happen regularly. Athletics have started mastering this in their course of upgrading the old WRs with "exciting new stars".   There is absolutely no reason, when your current weight is up to 89 kg for example, and the previous WR has been set in the old weight at 85-86-87 etc. that it's not automatically taken. It has been set under the current limit, there is no difference if the person weighted 85 or 88.5 kg it's within the range.. Now if the old category was over 89, then there would be an advantage, so those WR shouldn't be taken.    The best way is, like you mentioned, to use the bodyweight of everyone, but that is an impossible ask for any weightlifting governing body. I'm not even sure how they are able to run a normal excel..

Olympic sports Canoeing, Field Hockey, Golf, Modern Pentathlon, Shooting, Sport Climbing, Tennis, and Weightlifting will not be involved in any matter while the non-Olympic sport of Karate was also dropped. Baseball/Softball, Dancesport, and Wushu are non-Olympic sports which will get to participate in some capacity.   22/31 Olympic sports will be present (surfing has yet to be involved at a Youth Olympics).   I know we can't (or should) emulate the Olympic program, but hosts should try to include as many sports as possible, especially the relatively cheaper ones like shooting, sport climbing and weightlifting. The good thing is that it looks like the mixed NOCs events are gone (I think they mentioned this earlier).
    • schedule of events is always the same, you can look at the previous round and see how normally things go   no finals on Friday (qualifications of all events only), medal sessions are always only on Saturday and Sunday (alternating men and women's distances on the 2 days, mixed relay normally ends on Sunday)
    • There are both positives and negatives in this situation. The negative is that we are once again changing the weights and erasing records in an attempt to forget the past and "start all over". Nothing speaks more about the integrity of a sport, when it changes it's system every 5 years.   On the positive is that they are actually reducing the number of weights and not keeping the absurd 10. And i know, that for a long time in the past they were always 10, but i think 8 is the perfect balance.   If only wrestling could reduce them to 8 as well.. Boxing could have 10, but that would still be a plus from their current 13-15, or whatever number they have.
    • I think this time  won't get many 4th places, rather they have some chances to win it all (in Freestyle)
    • some Olympic stars are missing...   no Ceccon nor Martinenghi for  and, above all, no  Marchand
