We are skipping the 25m World Champs. Only two Hungarian swimmers will compete in Melbourne, Zsuzsanna Jakabos and Szebasztián Szabó, because they are "short course specialists". The rest are staying home, the calendar is too stacked with events.

What other events have there been for them other than the European and world championships and their respective qualifying events? :p

Honest question, I don't really see swimming being 'in the picture' much outside of the few championships, which usually is not more than two or three a year..

If you'd like to help our fellow Totallympics member Bruna Moura get to the 2026 Winter Olympics, after her car crash on the way to the 2022 Olympics, every tiny bit of help would be greatly appreciated! Full story and how to help can be found here!

I mean... yeah, it's those, WCh and ECh, plus the national champs and the junior events for some. That's plenty enough for them in one year.

They would rather train for the next long course WCh in December than to "waste their time" in Melbourne. Don't forget that they would need be in Melbourne two weeks before the event starts because of the jetlag.

But surely they have other competitions in between? I mean, athletics has the same championships basically and a whole circuit of Diamond League, Continental Tour meets and whatnot :p

Isn't there also the ISL (International Swim League) where they swim in commercial teams?

That's been cancelled for this year (at least).

I always find weird how few competitions most swimmers do in a year. Take for example Katie Ledecky and Ariarne Titmus, arguably the top 2 biggest stars right now. Ledecky swam a few Pro Swim stops at the start of the year, then trials, World champs, closed her season with nationals and won't swim again likely till the US Open in december. Then Titmus swam even less, only trials, Commonwearlth Games and a few local meets. And won't even swim the SC world champs in Australia.

I guess it's the nature of the sport, to train a lot and peak in a few meets a year. But athletics is kinda the same and they race much more.

  • 2 weeks later...

This is an interesting development and this podcast seems to be the only mention of it anywhere? Unfortunately the podcast is as more advertisement for TritanWear than news report.

Ledecky swimming SCM in Toronto and Indianapolis is a nice surprise. The only time she did it was the ISL in 2019 and there wasn't 800 and 1500 races there. So the WR should be on alert if she is on a decent form.

She'll probably have McIntosh to push her in Toronto. Ledecky could feasibly break the WR at all three distances because they're all weak (Titmus' PB when she set the 400 WR was "only" 3:59 mid).

I'm a little annoyed that Titmus is ignoring SCM this year despite WCs being in Melbourne because she could lower the 400 and 800 WRs as well and help the AUS 4x200 set a massive WR (they might still be able to do it but it won't be as impressive).
