2022 Italian Spring Nationals

best of Day #4

basically, an off day...no truly remarkable clockings nor individual qualfying times for the upcoming World Champs were registered today in Riccione...

the most exciting thing was an electric blackout that caused a 30-min break in the middle of the final session...

however, here are today's champions:

men's 100 Fly: 1.Piero Codia, 51.65

women's 100m Backstroke: 1.Margherita Panziera, 1.00.25

men's 200m Backstroke: 1.Matteo Restivo, 1.57.56

women's 200m Fly: 1.Ilaria Cusinato, 2.10.36

men's 200m Breastroke: 1.Luca Pizzini, 2.10.98

women's 50m Freestyle: 1.Silvia Di Pietro, 25.10 (24.97 in prelims)

men's 200m Freestyle: 1.Marco De Tullio, 1.46.26; 2.Gabriele Detti, 1.47.50; 3.Stefano Di Cola, 1.47.55; 4.Stefano Ballo, 1.47.75 (all together, it's a qualfying standard for the World Champs for the men's 4*200m Free Relay)

B-Final: 1.Lorenzo Galossi, 1.48.26 (new Junior NR)

p.s. based on the results of all the 100m races of the single disciplines, also both the women and the men's 4*100m Mixed Relays and the 4*100m Mixed Medley Relay are officially qualified to the World Champs...

11 hours ago, phelps said:

unfortunately, it's not only 50/100m, it's the whole freestyle sector that's miles behind the world's excellence (Quadarella is just an exception to this "rule")...

for what concerns the sprinters, however, there are a few historical, technical and cultural issues to prevent Italy being a good Nation in those disciplines...

I don't know why? but we've always refused the idea of building up poweful swimmers, we normally care a lot about the technical skills and about the amount of kilometers swimmed by our athletes, but somehow we're always behind the rest of the world when it comes to develop strencht and power...

especially among the girls and especially the very young girls, there's always the scare to ask them to put on muscles, we normally refuse to send them in the gym lifting weights until they're at least 16/17 years old, as if it was a risk for their health* (many doctors refuse to give permission to the youngsters to lift the necessary amount of weights...and if you don't build muscles, there's no chance to be competitive in the sprint events -if you notice, Italian swimmers are usually also always poor at the start and in the turns, 2 more aspects of the game where power is really important)...

therefore, we have quite a good tradition over the middle and long distances, rather than the shorter ones...and if that's true among the men, imagine how bigger an issue it is among the women...

*actually, many gorls refuse also by themselves to push beyond certain limits because they don't want to sacrify their femininity (here in Italy, women with strong muscles = no beautiful females for most people and for the average media...we still live in the myth of the most famous models rather than the TV starlettes, the athletes are rarely seen as role models)...

That's a shame because it kills many of your relay chances and now Pellegrini has retired it's even worse. Hopefully sometime in the future Italy can move past those body image issues.

The Lithuanian national championships were held between April 19th-22nd

A nice amount of EJCH and EYOF qualifying times were reached and quite a few Lithuanian NR's and age group NR's were broken.

The most important race although was the 100m women's breaststroke, where Rūta Meilutytė finished 2nd with a 1.07.07, behind Teterevkova's 1:07.01

This time was enough, and it's likely that Rūta's comeback is in full force, since she has a 50,100m Breaststroke qualifying mark for both the World and European Championships.

    • The Democrats have only themselves to blame for the outcome. However, just to think what were two candidates for a president of the most powerful country is just laughable. The meltdown of European countries on these results is quite a popcorn moment though, love to see it, especially the German one.  Also, someone said RIP Ukraine, RIP Palestinians - like Palestinians were doing so well over the past year while Democrats were still in charge, so now is gonna be even worse? Yeah, Trump might not be as generous in helping Ukraine though.

    • What I'm surprised at here is that the sunrise and sunset both change by 27/28 minutes over those two weeks, providing almost an hour more of sunlight from the beginning of the Games to the end. I didn't realize it changed that fast. Growing up in Canada, I always felt like one day in late October we suddenly got 4 hours less sunlight, and one day in early April we suddenly got 4 hours more.

And his #1 geopolitical enemy is China. Not Russia, North Korea or Iran but China. Modern society especially in Europe simply doesn't understand that becuse nobody is old enough to remember the Monroe Doctrine which predates fascism by a full century. I don't think even in USA they call James Monroe a fascist

    • Vast majority of Americans will disagree with you. That's all that counts. I dont see many differences in so called fascism between democrats and republicans. Both were bombing any country they picked, both were ruining systems they wanted to.  I prefer reds more because they are at least honest about it. Also, i dont like what this ultraliberalism brought to our whole Earth. Whoever opposes this level of insanity will have my vote.
    • YEC Semi-Finals are set:   Aryna Sabalenka vs Cori Gauff Barbora Krejcikova vs Zheng Qinwen   Krecikova beating Gauff in two sets means Iga Świątek was eliminated with 2-1 record.
