On a more serious note, I wouldn't mind an obstacle race, it at least keeps it align with its military origins.

Besides that, archery would be another viable option.

I was thinking of sports climbing ie the 2-up, first to the top kind.

Modern Pentathletes mutiny against the moronic leadership of MP, appeal to Thomas Bach (Gold Medal, Fencing, Montreal 1976) & the rest of the IOC, who never won a gold medal.

I'm not sure modern pentathletes will get the response they want from the IOC. I'm pretty sure it was the IOC who told the federation to modernize and become more accessible or risk being dropped from the program.

No, they're not - Samaranch Jr denied this. The IOC just wants a change towards the public. It can be done easily with riding being reformed, but even dropping the riding will not help, if all the competitions are behind a paywall and the TVs who have the TV broadcasting rights are not getting any material, because there is no TV broadcast material - only the UIPM TV is broadcasting.

The next thing - IOC wants the athletes in the core of decision making process. The athletes are punished for any protest against dropping the riding - Taishu Sato got a yellow card when he appeared on the fencing piste holding a T-shirt saying "keep riding" - there is no rule he broke. Marek Grycz says the athletes were threatened with exclusion for having such a T-shirt by the Technical Delegate Ágnes Kulcsár - also no rule broken.

The obstacle run was already chosen before the UIPM Congress - that's why among the criteria for the new 5th discipline there was a one saying "it cannot be under governance of any IOC recognized organization" - this is something totally different to fencing and swimming (and in some way running and shooting). This brought obstacle run as a favorite - Rob Stull is both, the Americas representative in the Board of World Obstacle and a president of American Confederation of Modern Pentathlon. Also an announcer (or a screamer would be more appropriate word) at most UIPM competitions for almost a decade already.
John Helmick, the treasurer of UIPM, said that "they are the athletes" - because most of the UIPM EB members used to compete in pentathlon. That's their way of "athletes in core of decision process".

What stops IOC from removing MP from the Olympic programme? Especially now that they have a great excuse of promoting "urban" sports for kids as Olympic sports? They wanted to remove wrestling & boxing before and there's no way MP has any celebrities or other VIPs trying to defend it.

Certainly this is the way most decisions are made in politics, business, universities etc nowadays.

  1. Small cabal decides it wants to change something.
  2. Pretends there is a crisis.
  3. Launches a “period of discussion.”
  4. No conclusions are reached because everyone disagrees with each other
  5. Small cabal goes ahead & does what it always wanted to do.

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
    • The worst editions in XXI century for us were Vancouver: 5 medals (only 1 gold for Razzoli's on the penultimate day) and Sochi: 8 medals (but no gold). Turin was already a prelude to this bad period, although the number of gold medals was ok. Overall we won fewer medals at home than in 2002 and this was probably the only case in the 21st century when the host country won fewer medals at home than 4 years earlier, either in summer or winter. In general the years 2008-2016 were very bad in our sport, both in summer and winter. Only 2018 in Korea was a slight rebuild + 2 fantastic summer editions in Tokyo and Paris. in Beijing 2022 we won a lot of medals - 17 but only 2 gold (If it weren't for Gogga's injury, I think it would have been 4 gold).
