I am happy that breakdancing is officially out! One of the best news from IOC in a while.

Karate and Breakdancing where both equaly terrible

I'd go for karate being significantly worse, since it felt so...negative. Like, a DQ for kicking too hard, all those kicks and punches that were - by design - more like 'almost hits' than actual hits, it felt more like a sort of dancing than actual fighting. Not to disrespect the athletes, I'm sure it's super tough to do, but for me as a viewer it really didn't feel like a sport where the participants were going all-out and for breaking I definitely did have that feeling (like in the men's final, where both athletes at the end were absolutely done in terms of energy left).

I'm aware holding back is kind of part of karate as a sport, but that's also why I just didn't like it in the slightest :p

Ya, :KSA Hamedi being disqualified remains one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen in any sporting event. I don’t know how justified it was within the WKF rules, but either way it felt really wrong.

I would be really disappointed if kumite ever came back to the Olympics. I would be okay with a return of kata, because it at least provides something completely different to the Olympics rather than being the world’s lamest combat sport. Plus at least if you KO your opponent in a kata competition there won’t be any controversy about the disqualification.

One of the best choices made for Paris 2024.

People can say what they will about how subjective breakdancing is, karate still managed to have more controversial officiating.

Im really surprised to read about the breackdancing is the same or even better than karate, which for good or bad, is a martial art with a sport competition with many decades of developmente, in the other side we have just a type of dancing with jurys.......a non sport competition is the same or even better than a sport, ok.

The Karate can be or not part of the olympic games again, it doesnt changes the essence of the olympics in anyway, i hope i never listen about breackdancing again except in a movie, serie or watching some dudes dancing it in the streets.

The judging systems for kata and breakdancing were actually both completely changed specifically for the Olympics, so they were both as old as one another.

And karate might have had many decades of development but that doesn’t mean the end product was any good as a TV sport, and it also had arguably the most controversial officiating decision of the entire Tokyo Olympics.

Doest it matter ? Should it ?

I mean, the vast majority of olympic events are shit TV products anyway that no one watch outside of the Olympics.

    • need to work on the celebrations... or just drop them?   Btw, these jerseys suck and I remember Zambia playing in all white with red numbers. At least they have orange on national flag but still...
    • British Columbia in general and Vancouver in particular are awesome and it’s great more people got to discover it thanks to Vancouver 2010.
    • And of course the British being famous for curmudgeons, there were always plenty of curmudgeons to quote.  Then of course from the opening ceremony and the cycle race on the very first morning it was obviously going to be triumph, so everyone just shut up for a while.
    • Yep, the amount of emergency services I heard at some point was a little extreme (for our little town), so I checked what was going on and saw they were all being called to a specific location. Until then I thought maybe it was part of a parade of trucks and agricultural vehicles that was on it's way from the next town over, decorated with lights and stuff.   Since I knew it was on the parade route, I was sure one of those big vehicles had hit people somehow (there were, besides the many vehicles, also two helicopters on the way, meaning it certainly wasn't about a single victim).   We picked our bikes and went to take a look, absolutely chaos in the area. Never saw so many services combined together, fire trucks from 20km away, ambulance after ambulance came racing by, people frantically trying to make way for them (the roads weren't really closed yet).   While there we heard someone who had been close say that the parade hadn't arrived yet and what seemed to have happened was that a car from the other side came onto the roundabout and simply never turned. "It's a massive drama over there, unbelievable", he said.   Quite quickly rumours started spreading of course, the first one turned out to be true: a middle aged (local) woman was behind the wheel and seems to have become unwell. Local security camera showed the car going at high speed right before the roundabout.   Plenty of rumours going around in terms of who were involved of course, and people keeping each other up to date to see if they know this or that family and such...   Never expected my little town to be big news in the Netherlands, even including some breaking broadcasts, live reporters and everything, damn. By far the biggest thing to happen here in my memory

    • For me, these were very good Olympics, and British sport benefited greatly from them, and is still benefiting. I fear it will be much worse here. Canada also benefited very good on Vancouver 2010 – this is very good see in the medal standings of subsequent Winter Games after 2010 and earlier.
    • Nobody hates Britain more than the British media so… I recall it being quite a pessimistic tone before the London games started.
    • I'm curious what was written before London 2012? Did they attack their own country, or did they just keep quiet?

    • Very true point.  Although I think at this point everyone is just holding their collective breath until the test event.  The NHL isn't going to rage anymore until then because it's not like that would make the arena progress go any quicker
