Doping Cases and Bans Thread (2016 & 2017)

IAAF has kept Russia's ban for all international competitions, but left an opening for "provably clean athletes" to start in Rio according to some journalists. Question is how they'd prove that: their athletes only competed in Russia this year and the doping controls in Russia are nothing but a joke (like international testers being sent away by armed guards).

I think it's up to the IOC and what they decide next week.

No. Only IOC can ban anybody from OG, so we need to wait for the 21st June. But athletes can qualify for the Olympics only on IAAF events, so if Russian athletes will be allowed to participate(doesn't matter, under which flag), they need to be already qualified.

ok thanks for clarifications

S. Coe just answeared that.

There can't be any russian athletes competing under russian flag in any international competition (which includes the olympics). As far the IOC is concerned, they deal with the IAAF (not with national federation, nor with athletes) which is an association that counts 200 or so members, none of which representing Russia at the moment.

You can't run under your own flag during the olympics if there is no national federation recognized by the ioc-recognized international sport federation (IAAF in that case).

I think it can be summarized like this?

Will Russian athletes compete in Rio under the Russian flag?

No.

Could Russian athletes compete in Rio under the Olympic flag?

Possibly.

I remember that nearly 5 years ago there was a discussion on one Russian site, which "doping team" will be banned first - Russian racewalkers or Norwegian "asthmatic" skiers. First ones won;(

How are the average Russian sports fans looking at Russian athletes and especially race walkers by the way? Do they accept that especially the race walkers are mostly dirty, or is it more like "they're clean but people try to frame them?".

I've never actually read how average Russians think about that, so I'm quite curious. (the only person I read about that is some weirdo on Twitter who is saying that every tiny thing is a huge conspiracy :p )

It's hard to say about real average position.

Except the one you said, there are two more "big" opinions(if it can be said so).

The first one is that as there are no proofs from Seppelt and company(available for usual people), except some edited parts of videos, and photos, where you can hardly name the people on them, this is totally wrong to say something about any disqualifications.

Many people also notice that there are no such massive deals about Chinese, American, Kenian and so on, and that's because there is no such control in these countries(or they don't pay attention on this).

Anyway, only 3-4% percent say that the decision is right(except ones with Ukranian flags on avatar, lol) - more say that only walkers and 3-4 other dopers should be disqualified, and no more.

It's happening, Russians are goinf full CAS trying to overun the IAAF decision:

It's nice that someone who is clean beyond any doubt like Nizhegorodov is leading the charge... Such integrity.

    • It was also nice to have actual crowds again. I think the Beijing organizers did the best they could given the COVID regulations that still existed in China at the time, but it sure did dampen the atmosphere *a lot*.
    • I was in premium economy as well, the extra five inches of leg room definitively helped me stay sane.   For BA I was in business class and I just wasn't impressed at all, despite the cabin itself being really good (it was a 787-900 so their newer business class product). The service was just... not good enough for international business class - they actually made me appreciate Air Canada xD . With Condor I could forgive the service not being that good because of how little (relatively) I paid, and the seat was comfortable enough.
    • Yes. This was the best WOG since at least Sochi 2014. I only started paying attention to the Olympics after London 2012, so small sample size. But, this was the best WOG I can remember. European fans and atmosphere make everything better in my opinion.
    • There were lots of good moments , this olympics felt so special (I am talking of WOG). The last time I really enjoyed viewing WOG was in Sochi & this tops it. So many feel good moments, very well attended event with spectators filling up stands & making an atmosphere. So many top performances, but for me the  women team dominating the Biathlon event was really special. All 3 of them were just so good & gave top performance. I love it how the female commentator pronounced  Lou Jeanmonnot  & finally grazie mille  we loved it! Thanks for making me fall in love with winter sports again
    • I'm surprised that some Hungarians here are interested in some Nazis in Kiev, instead of their country's economic decline over the last 15-20 years, falling under Romania's level of GDP, when around 2000 it was the richest country in the all former post-communist region. But I understand that this is Orban's tactic to continue ruling and stealing the country, to distract from truly important matters and focus on trivial matters. Clinton's campaign slogan in the USA many years ago: "The economy, stupid!" I think that the current opposition leader in HUN should probably do the same- just do your thing and let Orban himself with all of this Soros, Nazis, etc, only the Martians are still missing in this madness, but that may come to pass
    • I found Condor really nice. I did upgrade myself, so maybe thats why. I would fly them again
    • So, wanted to update on this now that I’m back home in Seattle to say I had a really good time in Milan. I ended up not going to events outside of Milan (I went to short track, speed skating and hockey), and it was probably a good decision to keep things simple for my first Olympics.   Getting around in Milan was a breeze, and I feel things were pretty well organized at the venues (though the ice hockey venue definitively could have used a couple more weeks of work). I was especially pleased with the speed skating venue, given it’s a temporary track it looked really good once you were actually in your seat and things were well organized for spectators (even though it was a looooong walk to and from the train station).   So ya, happy with the experience, as a newbie to both attending the Olympics and traveling in Europe. Def made me want to attend the French Alps in 2030 (and subject them to my horrible-for-a-native French accent xD )   Thanks to  for being good hosts.   As an aside, I now understand why people dislike British Airways, and Condor was surprisingly okay, though it was definitively a "you get what you paid for" situation (flew SEA-LHR to get to Europe and FRA-SEA on the way back).   Edit: oh, and big shout-out to the volunteers who were universally lovely.
    • Hello everyone, and yes, on the road to LA28! I’m sure there will be some great discussions here.   I made a profile here four years ago and now I’ve finally become active   Better late than never.
