Ice Hockey 2018 - 2019 Discussion Thread

what a match of Samuel Buček, last year he introduced himself with the already mentioned super goal against the USA at the U20 World Champs and today he already scored 2 very "arrogant" beauties against the goalie of the Traktor Tchelyabinsk Vasily Demchenko :d

nice and refreshing actually to see new young faces fighting for a spot or two in the final roster for the world champs on home soil

well, you need to have some balls to enter the ice with Wayne Gretzky´s number  I don´t even remember if anyone since the Great one had ever played with this number anywhere...

well, you know, sort of one of those generally unwritten rules ...:p but yeah, apparently the Russians don´t really care, so no big deal, I guess :p

btw probably you didn´t know but the number 99 is so far the only retired number NHL-wide  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_National_Hockey_League_retired_numbers

now, yes it is about NHL, but it is usually used around the whole world that players do not play with this number

the Czechs look in great shape right now...today, it took half match for them, but then they dominated Finland and secured the final victory of the Sweden Hockey Games with still 1 round to be played...:yikes::bowdown:

in the other match from today, instead, the hosts from Sweden won their match against Russia after the "Sbornaja" bounced back from 0-2 to 2-2 early in the 3rd period, but finally they couldn't keep the pace of the Swedes and gave up 2 more goals (the last one being a "classic" empty netter with just a few seconds still to go)...

    • Some notable  retirements:   Elisavet Pesiridou (athletics - 100m hurdles) - She announced her retirement on her 34th birthday. She competed in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. She narrowly missed Paris 2024 despite being in good form, the rest of he field seemed to get stronger and her ranking was a bit lower even though she was quite consistent. She struggled with injuries in 2025.   Fani Tzeli (taekwondo) - She was 7th in Tokyo 2020 but didn't qualify for Paris 2024. Still, she is only 24 yo and seemed to be rising up again after winning bronze at the European Championships so it is a bit surprising.   Aikaterini Divari (sailing) - She competed in Tokyo 2020 but didn't qualify for Paris 2024. Only 25 yo.   AJ Ginnis (alpine skiing) - Despite winning a silver at the World Championships he never got to compete at the Winter Olympics as he was always unfortunately injured. A shame as he is by far our best winter athlete ever. Only 31 yo, and I have a feeling he might come back in 2030 based on his last interview...

    • Let's see how hard Brazil will try not to qualify again.
    • Well.  Having gotten it a bit at a distance a few comments about my experiences   Travel: Very happy. Flying to and from was a breeze (the plane home slighty delayed). The same can be said about getting around in Milano. Getting around outside was of course slightly harder, especially with some delays back from Antholx (but i guess that's not a big surprise when a lot of people leave a place in the mountains)   Atmosphere: Very happy around the venues, but it's also very clear that it's smaller than the Summer games. People weren't following the events wherever you went. Alcohol certainly made a difference between Paris and now. Sadly did experience a few who should certainly have stopped a couple of beers earlier.    The logistics at the venues:  Very easy to see that Santagiulia is new and absolutely not a perfect venue. Seems like some kinks were fixed when I got there, but there's still stuff to work out. The food at the Milano venues were meh and there were quite some lines. Tesero was a chaos when it came to getting food, but the quality was slightly better at the skiing venues.
