Bobsleigh IBSF World Cup 2021 - 2022

Recommended Posts

Friedrich is back on top, ahead of Brad Hall from GB, and another 6 different countries inside the Top 8.

Far more competitive than aerials could ever offer.

What a stupid comparison! It's 2 different sports . In aerials there are 6 countries , that can pretend to medals : Russia , Belarus , USA , Switzerland , Ukraine , Australia. I think , that you don't like this sport because Croatians there are too weak:stars:

Any good gymnastics/trampolining country can gave a good aerials team, just need finance & coaching.

To be fair, any good sprinting country can get a decent bobsleigh team, just need finance & coaching & learning the handful of tracks there are in the world :p

Spoiler

I am definitely in the bobsleigh camp in the bobsleigh vs aerials discussion though.

Dunno about that. In Britain we run two squads, basically - an Armed Forces team & a 4x100m sprint team.  It’s the army team that’s winning all the medals while the 4x100m team are struggling to qualify.

Well yeah, you do still need more than just fast sprinters :p Just like for aerials you still do need people with actual talent for it than just good gymnastic skills.

The problem with aerials is that it literally exists only in 13 nations. 12 of whom are provisionally qualified for Beijing. It's non-existant elsewhere.

And no new nation has joined the circuit for years now. Either they can't join, or FIS is doing a criminally bad job in expanding the discipline.

I think the last nation who tried to join was Brazil. They sent two former gymnasts to try to qualify for Sochi, and it ended so badly that one of them (or did both eventually?) ended up permanently paralysed following a training accident. It was disturbing, and honestly FIS should be held complicit.

Rant ends.

The other one disappeared into oblivion I think, Lais Souza got paralysed...that was a horrific story to follow back in 2013 (?), right when I was really getting into following Brazilian winter athletes :(

Something that shows how obscure aerials is: the calendar is eerily empty. There's the World Cups and some national championships, and other than a few random competitions here or there...that's it. Even bobsleigh and skeleton have a significantly larger overall calendar outside of the World Cup.

Well yeah it is dangerous, but lets be fair, All freestyle skiing are similarly dangerous, Halfpipe, Ski Cross, Big Air are all dangerous as well...and if we want be nitpicking Alpine Skiing (Speed events) and Ski Jumping are probably even more dangerous..so it is not fair to just point the finger only to the aerials.

Aerials are quite fun and spectacular to watch. I personally like them.

Now the other question is if it is enough competitive to be at the Olympics and have 3 medal events, and here yes I agree that it is not. But again, it is not the fault of :CHN:RUS or :USA:UKR:BLR:SUI that nobody else is able to compete at major events in this, and other nations do not even consider to try starting the program. The Czechs had a Olympic champion in this sport (I remember Valenta races were extremely followed in the country) but it did not help the Aerials program in the country at all.

    • Also, I just logged back into my account, where it sent me to update my profile, and when I saved that, I got a screen that included a check mark next to 'Registered for the Draw'.  Not sure I totally trust it, but it does at least say so.  (There's nothing specifically referencing Drop 2 or anything...might just be a stock screen.). I'm curious what it would look like if you looked at it @esube.  https://tickets.la28.org/
    • I didn't buy any tickets, but didn't get the e-mail.   We bought tickets on my wife's account (earlier timeslot), but not 12, and she got the e-mail.

    • I am very curious.  We got extremely lucky in the first ticket drop, both my and my wife's emails were selected for relatively early time slots-- early enough that we bought our full allotment of tickets for good stuff.  Not swimming or gymnastics of course, but we were really pleased,  d   But today I received an email on one of those accounts saying that we were entered into the second drop because we hadn't used up our 12 ticket allotment.  I went back and counted-- twice-- and yes, we certainly did purchase 12 tickets on that account.      I am not sure I want any more!  Did this happen to anybody else?
    • Congrats to your talented team. Don't know what happened with the Dutch men. In qualies and race for bronze they were a lot faster than Italy, but in the second round our third man (Tijmen van Loon) was almost 1,5 second slower than in the two other rounds.    We really need Jeffrey Hoogland back in our team. That's the only way to give competition to the British team.    However, today was a special day. For the first time since very long we entered the Women Team Pursuit and eventually won the bronze medal. Well, a lot of countries didn't participate, but with a national record of 4.12 still a very promising result. There are rumors that Milano Cortina 1.500 meter speedskating Olympic champion Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong will enter the team.
    • Ju Jitsu    One of the worst martial arts really. Surely the middle east lobby.   The -52kg W final  deserved to win gold and did all attacks still lost to  who was trailing even on advantages and did nothing.      Total mockery of the sport. C'mon I'll happily watch Wushu here instead. Really wished to watch woodball
    • I couldn't find any intro on asian games hub for these games
    • Just realised there is Teqball here     Explains why there is no Sepaktakraw    I think the Teqball federation may have pledged to contribute to the hosting costs for the sport making it an easy choice for organizers and anyhow retired / 3rd string Sepaktakraw players only play it so believe that was the reason.     Anyway hate that artificial sport
    • Day #6 Medallists (Olympic Total only)   women's -86kg:       men's -94kg:         not the best day in Karlos Nasar's career, but it was enough to easily win also Today's competition and enlarge his gold medals collection
