Just catching up with the Day 1 of the European Dressage Championships.

What a test for :LTU Vanagaite. :hyper: "Only" 66% today, but there is so much more in the bag with more practice. She was trending at 71-72% for a good while.

Damn impressive score by Henri Ruoste! :FIN

Too bad his horse had an off day in Tokyo (spooked at a camera person).

Finland is having a nuts championships across the board. Their team result will smash their usual placing (12th-14th).

:GER Germany gold, :GBRGee Bee silver, :DEN Denmark bronze. GB getting overscored again and again, but nothing new here. I guess that lottery funding must be going straight into judges pockets. Hughes was awarded 74% for a sloppy test worth of maybe 69%.

Dufour dropped the silver for Denmark on her own though (spook coming out of pirouette), much like she did at Rotterdam 2019 (and possibly in Tokyo too...). Every time it happened on that first pirouette. And on two different horses. Unbelieveable.

:SWE Sweden got 4th. Nilshagen was severely underscored.

But the real stars are the "B" nations for whom this event was basically staged... :FIN Finland had three riders scoring over 70%! Crazy. Usually they are happy to have one breaking this psychological barrier, but this time they collectively stepped up to the team total of 218% and 6th place. They also have three riders advancing to the Special (Top 30), which is unheard of.

:LUX Wagner outscored two (!) Dutch team riders with 73%. :hatoff:

:HUN Aniko Losonczy 29th with 70.046%. :yikes: And she even came back from a large error mid-test, so good on her. She has qualified for the next round which is massive for Hungary. @Vektor

:SVK Bugan got 50th. Improved his score from Rotterdam, but dropped two places. :MDA Glinka and :LTU Vanagaite debuted their respective nations finishing 57th and 58th, respectively.

BBC has live coverage, which I think is otherwise on the FEI’s pay-tv system

Well, the judges got the podium right this time. Gold for :GER von Bredow-Werndl, silver for :GER Werth, but bronze for :DEN Dufour this time in the special. Doesn't make up for Tokyo though. Especially since Dufour lost the silver on the final centerline.

But then again, Bohemian is a sensitive horse so I guess we will have to get used to these blips.

    • Though I did just see that today's race isn't valid for FIS points.
    • Let's not act as if these things never happen before. Serbia's cross-country skiing drama a week before the Olympic qualifying for Beijing ended: FIS | Cross-Country Results - Zlatibor (SRB) 2021/2022   Drndic with a DNF, despite being - on paper at least - the best athlete. She didn't just 'not finish', she stepped out barely 50 meters before the finish, because if finishing, the points for her competitor would have been better due to the way points are calculated. Ended up with lots and lots of yelling and screaming and fighting and cursing, DNS the next day and in the end Serbia sent none of them.   This is not a shit move by Canada, this is a fault of the system at most.
    • Yes agreed, resetting it would help make it more dramatic as no one would be running away with it. We could also set it that there is a small reward for ranking higher after each round… maybe they start the next round with a “head start” so they bring a few points into the next round? But starting from scratch each round might be cleaner
    • I like the concept a lot. My only worry would be that the nations doing the best individually would also end up at the top here as teams are only made up of pairs. Whereas in a bigger team it gives the nations not doing so well individually to have another chance if they are lucky enough to be placed in a good team. Any way we can balance it?
    • I thought about accumulating, but for higher drama it may be reset like in cycling track elimination races
    • Those are the national junior championships, national championships are in Steinkjer, starting tomorrow: FIS | Steinkjer (NOR) - Event Details - Cross-Country
    • Nice for them, but also kind of too bad they pick the exact same two as last time. Would have been nice to see Regina Martinez for example (although I'm not sure that would have been logistically possible, depending on how they're going to do the flag bearer thing in the first place).
