Wow what a disaster for Russia. Only one bronze after 4 events :yikes:

their sabre girls saved the face, at least...

they have 3 women among the 4 medallists...:yikes:

meanwhile in the men's foil they are all already out before the last 8 (where there are 3 Italians, 2 Britons and no Americans, by the way)

shame! shame! shame! on Garozzo and Avola...they literally threw a medal away against no-name fencers...:wall:

by the way, quite a lot of surprises also in both today's events...not our usual World Champ (it's the Chinese jinx, of course)...

Disaster????????When italian fencing supporters start to understand that winning in fencing is much, much, much, much more difficult than 15 years ago? Disaster for a world medal?Ok Garozzo  and Avola are better than korean and spanish fencers but surprising results often happens in sport (remember Marco Cecchinato in Paris)

it's not a disaster..but still it's a disappointing outcome, especially when 2 other people waste such a chance against clearly weaker opponents...

frankly, once getting to that specific quarterfinals situation, it was absolutely normal to expect 3 Italians among the top 4...and as it didn't happen, it's also absolutely normal being unhappy (I'm pretty sure that Avola and Garozzo are the first to blame themselves for those losses and even more because at a certain point they looked in control of thier respective assaults)...

now let's hope that Foconi doesn't imitate his teammates and "fills his contract" by winning that fu**in' Gold medal...

    • Though I did just see that today's race isn't valid for FIS points.
    • Let's not act as if these things never happen before. Serbia's cross-country skiing drama a week before the Olympic qualifying for Beijing ended: FIS | Cross-Country Results - Zlatibor (SRB) 2021/2022   Drndic with a DNF, despite being - on paper at least - the best athlete. She didn't just 'not finish', she stepped out barely 50 meters before the finish, because if finishing, the points for her competitor would have been better due to the way points are calculated. Ended up with lots and lots of yelling and screaming and fighting and cursing, DNS the next day and in the end Serbia sent none of them.   This is not a shit move by Canada, this is a fault of the system at most.
    • Yes agreed, resetting it would help make it more dramatic as no one would be running away with it. We could also set it that there is a small reward for ranking higher after each round… maybe they start the next round with a “head start” so they bring a few points into the next round? But starting from scratch each round might be cleaner
    • I like the concept a lot. My only worry would be that the nations doing the best individually would also end up at the top here as teams are only made up of pairs. Whereas in a bigger team it gives the nations not doing so well individually to have another chance if they are lucky enough to be placed in a good team. Any way we can balance it?
    • I thought about accumulating, but for higher drama it may be reset like in cycling track elimination races
    • Those are the national junior championships, national championships are in Steinkjer, starting tomorrow: FIS | Steinkjer (NOR) - Event Details - Cross-Country
    • Nice for them, but also kind of too bad they pick the exact same two as last time. Would have been nice to see Regina Martinez for example (although I'm not sure that would have been logistically possible, depending on how they're going to do the flag bearer thing in the first place).
