I would've assumed that both the BBC commentators and spectators from the stadium were watching sport climbing just like all of those spectators at the beach volleyball events

Nope, him not qualifying would've been an upset. 

 

Last season he was fully capable of being top 8 in Europe on time alone, but this year the competition raised their game, so finals are rather unlikely.
