Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024 Qualification Systems

Recommended Posts

There are anyway very few sports with pure ranking qualification:

Tennis, Badminton and Judo if am not mistaken. Not sure about Triathlon as I don’t follow that sport at all.

Nah, long live rankings wherever there is a well established world cup style circuit, as opposed to random qualifying competitions one in a while. Ranking fails mostly happens when they consider way too many lower level tournaments, with 3x3 basketball being the extreme case - a normal ranking with world cup + world series would have been much better, but they had to push for "universality" so...

some rankings are horrible in predicting who is actually the best.

predicting is not their purpose though, rankings are only meant to tell who has been among the best in a certain set of competitions in a certain (past) period.  Qualification tournaments, especially in sports with a draw and an elimination format, are a much worse way to find out who is the best

But then again, just in terms of performing under pressure, direct qualifiers are much more compatible with the Olympic Games.

  • 5 weeks later...

Here a very good article about the new Artistic gymnastics qualification system, including an as if qualification for 2020.

https://thegymter.net/2021/08/22/fig-proposes-updated-olympic-qualification-process-for-2024-quad-what-does-it-look-like/

major changes will be again 5 spots per team, and no additional spots for NOC which qualify a team

Less places for all around at the WCH 2023 and NOC placed 13-15 can qualify two athletes

One spot only for specialist at the 2023 WCH, but two spots qualify via World Cup series in 2024

One spot for all around via Continentals

e.g. Croatia would have qualified one male athlete, but no female in 2020 with the new rules

In general I think the changes are ok, the only part I don't like is that NOC which took two or one quota at the WCH in all around, can do that again at the continental championship. In my opinion that is not fair.

2022 Championship remains the same, 2023 is new, but still that is only 8 quotas per discipline. The rest will be probably distributed at continental championships etc. Big question mark are the World Cups. In 2019 each WC provided 2 quotas. I think the will be either completely skipped or reduced to one quota.

on the Italian press, they say that's only the first allocation, but the next ISSF board would eventually explain also how quota places will be awarded at world cup events (they are sure it won't change much from the Tokyo system, barring the fewer spots available -it might be that there will be some earlier world cup events giving only 1 quota place available and some late world cup stages awarding 2 quota places...even fewer continental spots available are not out of order yet)...

in any case, it all will be known next year...

From Chinese OG champion Yang Haoran who attend a briefing session for athletes during President Cup,

1. 2022 WCh will allocate up to 1 quota per event for each NOC

2. 2023 continental championships will allocate up to 1 quota per event for each NOC

3. rest quotas will by allocated by ranking and no quotas will be allocated through World Cup.

It may change because of feedbacks from different sides.

Could be correct, I also read somewhere there will be no quotas in the world cups any longer

it would be a real shame...

olympic quota places up for grabs was one of the things that made the world cup stages more exciting (and granted them a true full participation, now there's a high chance to see many WC stages with loughable participation, especially those held in exotic and/or uncomfortable locations)...

    • Lots of chaos in Australia today to start the season. As usual, i lost the count of safety cars, that were in the race. • I think this is the first time this winter that I agree with you
    • a bunch of unfair morons that don't even know the rules     from the ISU Technical Rulebook:   Rule 254.8   The following situations will not lead to a disqualification in accordance with paragraph 3 above:   a) If a Competitor does not keep within the inner lane in the curve or when exiting the curve towards the finishing straight and therefore crosses the line to the outer lane, the Competitor will not be disqualified if returning immediately to the inner lane. When exiting the curve, the return to the inner lane must in any case have taken place before the first of the lines defining the 1000m finish on a standard 400m track.   (...)   so, unless there's some kind of impeding of the opposing skater, if someone just skate the inner curve wide and gets back within the 1000m lines, there's no room for any kind of punishment   neither Eitrem Yesterday nor Ghiotto Today did anything wrong (otherwise almost every 500m skater should be DQed when skating the final stint in the inner lane, as they just can't stay in because of the G force)
