Slovakia will participate in Table Tennis for the 4th time since the independence and 2nd time in a row. And just like in Rio 5 years ago with the same amount of 3 players, 2 of them returning.

Atlanta 96 (1), Beijing 08 (1), Rio 16 (3) & Tokyo 2020 (3)

Wang Yang and Barbora Balážová will return to the games for the second time after their Rio olympic debut. Tokyo will be first careers Olympics for Ľubomír Pištej.

The 30 years old Wang Yang, Naturalized Chinese, is citizen of Slovakia from 25th May 2011.

In that year, he was accused at the Junior World Championships of being 4 years older and had to withdraw from the competition. Later he managed to clear himself and prove his age. Later, the International Table Tennis Federation in fact recognized Wang's age after confirmations from the Chinese authorities, and successful confirmating blood density test.

Wang Yang debuted at the Olympics for Slovakia in Rio 2016 (For London 2012 he was the first reserve, but without any returned quota, he and Slovakia missed the Games) after a bye in the preliminary Round he defeated Marcos Madrid of Mexico 4-1 in the 1st round but sadly lost to future quarterfinalist Quadri Aruna from Nigeria in round 2 (1-4)

Wang Yang secured his spot to Tokyo as first Slovak Table Tennis representative by winning one of the 4 quotas at the World Qualifying Tournament in Qatar earlier this year.

Barbora Balážová, 29 years Slovak Table Tennis ladies number 1 of the last years is also going to return to the Olympics after her debut in Rio 2016. "Barbi" won her opener game after the bye in the pre-round, 4-0 over Yadira Silva of Mexico. But just like Wang among mens lost in the 2nd round after a never-ending thriller to Li Fen of Sweden 3-4.

This time, she is going to compete in 2 different events, apart the W Singles in which she qualified easily from World Ranking, she will play alongside her long time doubles partner Pištej in the very first Olympics Table Tennis Mixed Doubles competition.

Ľubomír Pištej is the only debuting Olympian in our Table Tennis delegation, a bit odd, since he is the oldest player (38) and most experienced currently active slovak table tennis player. In Tokyo he will play with Barbora Balážová in the Mixed Doubles Olympic premiere. Fresh European Championships silver medalist from last week in Poland, Balážová/Pištej will be seeded as number 6 for the 1st round (Round of 16).

One last fun fact.

Balážová/Pištej were selected :SVK sport persons of the month June 2021 (in the Slovak national public RTVS monthly - niké športovec mesiaca - show) so are the last SVK athletes before the Olympics with this precious award.

How does the draw work for team events. Will they just follow the ranking (which one) 1-16, 2-15 etc?

I think there are 8 seeds, the rest are unseeded.

    • I wonder if there is some drawback to this, we'll see I guess, but this sounds like an excellent change I think? I remember Acosta in Paris, that was....not amazing
    • writing here because it's going to heavily impact on the Olympics, but it's part of a way bigger blow for many sports in Italy    earlier Today, the Italian idiots running the government did change the rules about getting the Italian citizenship because of the heritage (ius sanguinis) now, only foreigners with at least 1 parent or grandfather/grandmother born in Italy will be able to ask for our citizenship now all those people with the Italian heritage coming from men/women further down the family tree won't get it because of that (of course they will still be able to earn it following the remaining pathways, like marriage or living here for at least 5 consecutive years -if coming from EU Nations, 10 if coming from outside EU)   this is basically the end of any chance to have an Italian competitive team in all those team sports where there are not enough athletes practicing within our Country like ice hockey, field hockey, baseball, cricket, lacrosse, flag football and even rugby (just to name the olympic sports), all disciplines where we always relied on major help from foreign born Italians   but this soon will affect also a few individual sports, when the consequences of the pandemic stoppage will come into effect (soon)   for this thread's purpose, it' obvious that now we won't have any chance to have a decent hockey team at the 2026 Home Olympics; we are forced to stay with the current shameful B division bunch of drunk players that can't even skate
    • NOC's qualified for the free dance (and eligible for earn Olympic quotas):    x3  x3  x2  x2  x2  x2   20 teams qualified but only 19 will earn quotas.
    • Maybe now the sport news and people here can do a little less celebration the next time a russian figure skater has their own disaster.Karma is a thing in sports too apparently, just had to get a bite in that a russian representing georgian had a disaster that opened the door for one of our own to the olympics. And now our main pair fall, whoops.
    • it took two Olympics (and 4 years) for UWW to finally realize there is a big big flaw in their current rules (we have this since early 2021)   in Greco-Roman, in high level specially in heavier weights it's just hard to score. in this case sometimes the match ends up 1-1. (1 pt for passivity caution for each) under current rules lots of wrestlers decide to be intentionally passive in first 2 minutes to receive the first caution. this created lots of ugly scenes in Olympics. for example  Yasmani Acosta won an Olympic silver in Paris without doing a thing! he was passive in his 3 pre-final matches and won all of them 1-1    UWW will test a new rule at the European Championship next week, only in case of 1-1 and only in Greco-Roman whoever gets the first point wins. I believe this will become an official rule soon, they should make this change long time ago but yet late is better than never   https://uww.org/article/uww-test-new-greco-rule-2025-european-championships
    • are my favorites for the time being.    could definitely grow on me as well. There's very few songs I'd count out before I get the chance to see them during the live shows.     P.S. "Baller"  would play at a trendy shop in LA, and I would enjoy it
    • Yes, correct. Anyway still not officially confirmed by our NOC though
    • They failed to qualify for the free dance by *0.01* points.
    • Massive upset by :LTU Ambruleviciud/Reed scoring 20 points less than usual after a fall and failing to qualify to Olympics. Massive blow and shock as they were basically almost guaranteed top10
    • 64.83m from 16 YEAR OLD Ziyi Yan  for a new world junior javelin record.....which she already owned.
