  1. Statues aren’t history. I don’t know when people started thinking that, but it just simply isn’t all that true. I don’t visit a statue to learn history; I visit a statue to honor the person it’s of. We shouldn’t have statues of people who killed thousands of natives, traded thousands of slavers for profit, fought to keep slavery as an institution, etc. In the 21st century we should have advanced far enough as a society to realize what these people did was incredibly wrong.
  2. It will be returned soon, but it will have an explanation of historical context accompanying it now.
  3. Not a Democrat anymore, not my problem
  4. No, doesn’t seem so. I’m not the biggest fan of the program this year in all honesty. They left out one of the female beach wrestling weight classes. Sports Climbing is only done in the Speed Time Trial format. There’s only 4 events in Ju-Jitsu (just drop it at that point). Dragonboat features a bunch of unusual distances. Sailing has mostly youth-only events, and 3x3 is U23 only. I do actually like the the program outside of that though, so I’ll still find some events to get invested. Honestly, at this point, it would just be nice to have a multi-sports games this year.
  5. Well the Mongolian guy is at the very least the Vice President of their NOC, so at least there’s some experience there.
  6. Erin Hamlin announced her pregnancy today.
  7. Pictograms for the 2020 Asian Beach Games: Who ever designed the Beach Woodball pictogram has clearly never watched Woodball (it’s basically Croquet from what I’ve seen). Besides, that the pictograms are pretty generic. The 3D effect is a nice touch. I’m not the biggest fan of the Sport Climbing pictogram either. Surfing needs a better position too.
  8. How mentally gone do you have to be to think this is funny or a good form of protest? I get there’s people who do not believe in what BLM is saying, or people who dislike the direction BLM has gone; but making fun of the way someone was basically mercilessly executed seems inhuman honestly.
  9. I will be really interesting to see what happens if loses the election. He is absolutely someone who would try to pull some dumb shit authoritarian takeover of the U.S. While, this might all seem like partisan talk and politics, these are the kind of states and attitudes that begin to fracture nations.
  10. Well for those us invested in the health of democracy and our country; we care. What you said right their is the difference between politics and morality/true democracy.
  11. I wouldn’t write it off before viewing other important statistics like how many people cops have killed, racial make up of arrests, etc. If those rates are more realistic than the rest of the country, then there is some improvement there. If those rates aren’t much lower, then we need to keep exploring options (and passing laws like the Equality Amendment, gun control, school funding, mental health funding, hire more social workers, etc.).
  12. I think the most important take away from this though, is that reform is possible. It might not be perfect, but people are happier with what they have now. At the very least, it was a step in the right direction. That’s a lot more than can be said about most other departments around the country.
  13. He needs to go. This might be the most idiotic thing he’s ever published. The dude was clearly not Antifa, and of course he won’t condemn police officers who pushed a 75 year old man to the ground.
  14. Just finished watching “Just Mercy.” I’m happy Amazon made it free for people around the country to view. I don’t know how it stands as a film, but it does stand is honest indictment of our criminal justice system. It also serves as a fantastic reminder of why the death penalty must be made illegal under our Constitution. Overall, the acting was great, and the cinematography was well done.
  15. Not officially. I’ll hold off putting them on the list until more than a “national sports official” says they should bid.
  16. Looks like they’re coming for football next
  17. This is beautiful. (The second video is the one I tried to share) We would give her a 105% for that speech in communication studies.
  18. Cool. I love when federations take an active interest in people’s work. I’ve found quite a few to be rather helpful, but some are just awful (here’s looking at you OCA, PGC, and Atos ). I’m glad that they’ve been supportive though because your research sounds interesting. Hopefully my contribution helped in some way
  19. @RobtheAggie have you tried partnering with the IBU for your research?
  20. Yep, looking forward on being 1 of the 5 (10 max) people there
  21. Whelp, that’ll be a huge net loss for the U.S. then
  22. Hahahahahahaahahahahahaahhaahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha Right, so why would any city want to host the Olympics if it’s seen as a net loss. I love both Baku and Doha. They are excellent at providing world class venues, and Baku actually gets people to show up. However, we can’t be stuck in the Beijing, Baku, Doha, and maybe London/LA cycle forever. That isn’t good for the long-term health of the Olympics. European Games were in 2015. I’m very much impressed with Baku.
  23. Sheriffs are generally worse than the PD. I’ve yet to be impressed by the standard of either. Personally, I don’t think eliminating the police is a good idea. I think it’s worth to look into and test alternatives, but for now, the police are an unfortunate necessity. I think there are a lot of reforms we could make within policing to make it better for everyone, but I do understand the position of those who want them gone (and I don’t blame them). Also, like John Oliver mentioned on his show last night, there’s a lot of other unsolved social issues in the U.S. that are contributing to bad policing, institutional racism, etc. We have to solve those in order to solve this current issue, which pretty much means that we’re fucked because Americans are dumb as shit, and incapable of attempting meaningful reform or following the guidance of strong research.
  24. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I loved Rio 2016. It would be impossible to deny that the organization of the games wasn’t a massive cluster fuck though. Brazil also had quite an impressive deficit when all was said and done. You can’t really blame cities for feeling like the Olympics are a lose/lose situation. The IOC has failed massively at making the Olympics a sustainable event. They have initiated some change in the last 2/3 years, but there’s still a lot of reform that needs to be done in order to make the Olympics sustainable, marketable, and successful.
