Yeah, it's not even close. 308 men have achieved an OQT in the qualification period compared to 242 women. Ultimately, there's just much more depth on the men's side compared to the women's.

The crazy thing is that even if you followed the qualification system before Tokyo and took the 16th place time from the heats, the qualification time would only get slower by 0.1 seconds from 53.61 to 53.71 and there would be only two new qualifiers. That's how insanely fast the Tokyo heats were. Hard to get a concrete number with countries like US and Australia not having their trials yet, some countries having more than two OQT athletes in an event, and some relay only athletes not being finalized. Id say 615 athletes would be a good guess.

One of the editors at swimswam reached out to World Aquatics about Penny's situation and finally got a response. Despite having the consideration time, she would not be allowed to swim the individual 100 free because she's a relay only athlete. So she needs the OQT. However, if she doesn't get the OQT, one of Maggie or MSH would still be able to swim because they also both have the consideration time + an OQT in another event.

I am still in shock. This has to be the worst, if not one of the worst qualification disasters in Canadian Olympic history.

Even if swimming did allow 3 athletes per NOC, it's very unlikely there would be any sweeps at these Olympics. There is a chance Australia would sweep the women's 100m freestyle but Siobhan Haughey and/or Marrit Steenbergen would likely prevent that from happening.

Yeah, I still remember in 2019 when Markus Thormeyer was the only guy who could reach OQTs. Now we have guys like Liendo, Knox, Kharun, Acevedo, Tierney, Jankovics, Kisil and other good swimmers like Wigginton and Axon. And other good prospects in the pipeline
