day 1 according to plan for the team 1 gold (the men's 4*50m free relay) and a couple of silver medals (Simona Quadarella over the women's 400m free -beating the old NR held by Federica Pellegrini- in a race where Isabel Gose improved the ER, previously held by Mireia Belmonte and the wpmen's 4*50m free, where we were on pace for the WR for 3 legs and then Cocconcelli blew everything out with an awful dive, losing a 3m advantage over Van Roon, who went on to easily win the race for their team in the end) in the other events, the usual Thomas Ceccon didn't even bother to enter the 200m back (likely an easy gold), a good Simone Cerasuolo in the men's 100m breast (but the race for gold is closed by the unbeatable Caspar Corbeau), a great Silvia Di Pietro, who set a new NR in the 1st leg of the women's relay and earned herself a good place in the final of the women's 50m fly and a few disappointing performances by the other guys (expected, but still) -

I think the North American press should stop whining and slandering the Olympic Arena and the Italian Olympics in general I see also a lot of clickbaiting posts on social media, posting old photos and reporting words such as of Elliotte Friedman in the above article, but it's all fake news the arena is basically ready, there are only some external finishing and the parking lots to be completed the rink size will be 60x26m (exactly like the O2 arena in Prague, where they played the world champs in 2024 -and many other times) and guess what? all European/International rinks are 60m (197 feet) long but maybe the Canadian coaches are afraid to make another bad tournament like they did in Turin in 2006 (when they actually had to play on traditional European-size rinks and Chris Pronger couldn't catch even the small Italian players on that ice )

no, it won't happen but she will start in some of the Europa Cup slalom races from next week (surely all those held in Italy, where we have double the number of allowed skiers)

Speed Skating at the Winter Olympic Games Milano Cortina 2026

final Track records at the new Oval in Milan for this weekend men's 1500m: Taiga Sasaki, 1.47.40 women's 1500m: Meike Veen, 1.57.66 it looks that it's a reasonably fast track, especially considering that it was the first competition ever by February, I hope it will be even faster, in order to see a few new Olympic Records (most of them were set in Beijing 2022) -
so, as expected, no gold in the men's Kata and only 3 total medals luckily, the great Matteo Avanzini saved our ass, winning the most prestigious gold of them all and renovating the great tradition has in the men's heavyweights after a few years of drought being one of the only 4 Nations (tbh, it should be 3, as only got it because they're the only serious player in Oceania) with people qualified to this World Champ final stage in every class should make us proud, but only one medal out of 10 kumite categories is definitely not acceptable, it must be named "disappointing" more in general, it's confirmed the great variety of competitive Nations in this sport and how difficult is it to take a medal home, with only the Host Country being capable of winning more than one gold medal and a good total of 28 Countries winning at least one medal out of "only" 12 competitions.

aggiornamento...
-
finally, our 3 Kumite guys made it through to the medal rounds, the 2 veterans (Semeraro, women's -68kg and Martina, men's -84kg) will fight for bronze and our new leader Matteo Avanzini will fight for Gold in the men's Heavyweights and also the Kata medal matches will feature the specialists, D'Onofrio in the bronze medal match in the women's division and Ghinami in the gold medal match in the men's division it didn't start well at all, but it looks that in the end it won't be a total disaster (provided Tomorrow we get the Kumite gold and all the 3 bronze medals -silver in the men's Kata it's basically written in the stone) ps @hckošice it looks that should lobby very hard for Karate's comeback to the Olympics
