  1. Sorry to reply to the same thing again, but I got curious about the last bit. One of my hobbies is to "study" about the history of gymnastics, and when I looked at the results from the previous World Championships, I eventually discovered that all of the (male) medalists from Yugoslavia were from the region where, nowadays, is Slovenia. But in 1950 Yugoslavia got their only medal with a female gymnast, and she's Tereza Kočiš who was born in Sombor (currently Serbia). Is she well known in Serbia? I mean, is she famous? I've visited some pages from Slovenia and it looks like they treat the medalists from the Yugoslavia era as Slovenians, but no mention about Kočiš, of couse. How is she seen in Serbia?
  2. Well, if it's random, there's not much one can do. It must be frustrating to be paired up with a low level player, but I'd rather have a smaller number of athletes together (2, 3, maybe 4) than a huge number of athletes gathered together in a team. The reason is simple: in events with very large teams, this randomness might work in favor of the least skilled athletes, and this is bad. Really bad. For example, in gymnastics, one gymnast from South Africa got gold with the team, and one gymnast from Ecuador got silver. Both were terrible in the qualifying sessions and only earned medals because some members of the team were truly outstanding. I get it: it's important to share experiences and play together, but in gymnastics one artistic gymnast who finished last in a number of events (the guy from South Africa) eventually got gold because the top 2 rhythmic gymnasts of the competition were on his team. So, yeah, it might be frustrating to be paired up with a not-so-great player, but I hope they evolve and work well together, eventually.
  3. Wait, what? What happened to him? Nice for Serbia to reach a historical final, but what a sad thing to happen with the gymnast. At least he has gotten a medal already.
  4. Overall, I'm disappointed with the women's competition. Villa is a great gymnast and deserved to win. Morgan had the meet of her life and scored very, very well. Bachynska has potential, but she needs a lot more training. This bronze medal was a huge present thrown on her lap. Tang had two falls, but if she had not fallen twice, she would have outscored Villa. On paper, Tang is the best gymnast of the competition and she will be a nice addition to the Chinese team next year, but she has to execute her routines perfectly to win a medal, and this was not what happened here. About Klimenko... Oh, Lord. Awful vault, two falls... Russia is really behind their glory days, for sure. Slevin did soooo well to finish sixth! Good surprise, if still very inexperienced. But she has natural talent and I hope she improves more and more. Now, I don't want to be mean, but Puiu is probably the last nail in Romania's coffin. She had poor technique, poor execution. I cannot even believe she represents Romania.
  5. And Bachynska just edged out Tang and won the bronze medal. Okay, Tang had two falls, but she was better, in my opinion. Barely.
  6. And Bachynska, in Ukrainian fashion, falls and loses the bronze medal. I'll pretend I'm shocked.
  7. Villa deserves this gold medal more than any other competitor. Morgan had an exceptional day, and she was very consistent, but this was Villa's to lose. Now let's see if Bachynska hits.
  8. First Olympic gold medal ever to Malaysia!
  9. I think you're just being bitter because you expected a medal for her and she had "bad luck". It's great to know a person from Belize and why not try to win a medal as well? It's a nice bonus. Besides, in 2010 the Chinese girl's partner was from Tunisia and you could see the frustration on her face during the matches, but they eventually won the bronze medal together. I'm sure he learned a thing or two with the Chinese girl and this is the whole point of the mixed event, in my opinion. Do you seriously believe they should sit back and drink tea together instead of playing a few matches and see how far they go?
  10. The Italian girl is going to win the women's all around easily. The level is terrible this year.
  11. I don't pay much attention to mixed events, but today the Brazilian girl was part of the mixed team in badminton that won the bronze medal. Even though this does not really count for the country, I'm really happy because this is a huge achievement for the athlete. Jaqueline Lima is from Piaui, one of the poorest states in Brazil. It's beautiful to be able to see how sports can change lives.
  12. A medal for Brazil in gymnastics! I'm SO SO SO SO happy!!!!!
  13. Finally some gymnastics, though the level is not quite high at the moment. What a stupid thing to split the all-around final in two sessions.
  14. The name of the winning team was Team Simone Biles. Even when she does not compete, her name brings gold medals to the team inspired by her.
  15. It's so nice to see our Lusophone irmãos (brothers) doing well! Timor Leste is the only nation not to have earned a medal at one of the events organized by the Olympic Council of Asia (even has 2 bronze medals -- Asian Marial Arts Games and Asian Martial Arts and Indoor Games -- and has one (Asian Beach Games). Finally has a continental medal now. And if Wikipedia is to be trusted, and won their first medals ever at the Asian Para Games.
  16. Serbia was very close to reaching a historical final on men's horizontal bar in gymnastics. The Serbian gymnast placed 9th and was only 0.033 behind the last qualifier. This is literally the smallest margin of difference possible in an individual apparatus in this competition. Bummer...
  17. Yay, a medal for Poland!
  18. What a great match in table tennis. In my opinion, the boy from Chinese Taipei deserved the bronze medal, but in the end the American got it.
  19. And this would be the second time in a row a boy from Chinese Taipei loses the bronze medal, since Hugo Calderano beat Yang Wei in 2014.
  20. This is HUGE news for gymnastics: the girl from Costa Rica qualified to the all-around final in artistic gymnastics. This is especially surprising because she did not qualify to the YOG "normally" -- she was the first reserve, and two weeks ago she was officially announced as a qualifier because the US gave up their quota. And now she will be in an Olympic final. AMAZING!

  22. Bronze medal for Romania in table tennis. I was rooting for the Indian girl, but nice achievement for Romania.
  23. Not only we don't have streaming of events in gymnastics, live scores are sloooooow to appear on the official website. It's unbelievable how pathetic the IOC is for not streaming gymnastics. Disgusting. (Yes, I'm triggered.)
