  1. This is not how things work. Only the top 24 teams qualify to the next World Championships, regardless of what continents they are from. Individual gymnasts are supposed to be qualify through continental quotas, or through the World Cup series, or through the next world championships. There are no continental quotas for the teams.
  2. Mustafina is not in good shape, but Biles is better than ever. I've given up doubting what this woman can do. She knows no limits.
  3. Disaster for Australia. Two gymnasts are injured, so they will have to use the alternate and every score will count. They need to be among the top 24 teams in order to try to qualify a team for the 2020 Olympics, and I believe this will be very hard now.
  4. Wait, what? What are "subjective sports"? The only sport with completely subjective scoring is diving, and one can argue that part of the score in artistic swimming can be subjective (technical merit is okay, but the artistic impression is totally subjective). Now, when referees make bad calls this is not because the sport is subjective, it's because they are bad refs.
  5. After learning that his daughter had reached the final match at the Para World Championships, Catia Oliveira's father had a heart attack and passed away. May he rest in peace. Original news in Portuguese here.

  7. Calderano being eliminated so early is the saddest moment in sport this year for me. I had such high hopes that he could reach at least top 8... But nope.
  8. In badminton, yes, but not in table tennis. Since the mixed team in table tennis is actually a pair, both of them have to be pretty good in order to advance. Only once a questionable player got a medal: a guy from Tunisia in 2010 because he was paired with the Chinese girl, but I still consider him to be a decent player. In smaller teams there's practically no way a low level athlete would earn a medal. But in big teams (6 to 13 people) it's very likely that a bad athlete will eventually win a medal somehow.
  9. Now that the YOG are over, I want to comment about the team event. It was terrible. I mean, it's a good idea to have a team event, but the fact that gymnasts were randomly assigned to teams made things unfair. For example, first and second place in qualifications in rhythmic gymnastics were occupied by Russia and Italy, and then both gymnasts ended up together in the same team (Team Simone Biles). The leader (and gold medal winner) in women's trampoline and the eventual gold medalists in acrobatic gymnastics were also part of the team. The problem is: the team also had one male artistic gymnast from South Africa who finished 33rd among 34 gymnasts. It also had one female artistic gymnast from Singapore who finished 27th out of 32 gymnasts. And, yes, they were awarded gold with the team. Teams should have been smaller, and gymnasts should have been given the choice to add who they wanted to their teams. At the very least, they should have created teams based on continents (North America, Europe 1, South America, Africa and so on) in order to guarantee everybody was on the same level. While it's great for South Africa and Singapore to have a gymnast who is now an Olympic medalist in gymnastics, I ask myself if they really deserved to be there. Now, not everything was problematic, though. The mixed pairs in acrobatics from Portugal and Belarus earned team medals. So did Adam Tobin from Great Britain and Robert Vilarasau of Spain. None of them won medals when competing alone, and they did all great, so they deserved a medal and they got it through the team event. The problem is that a bunch of people who did not deserve medals also earned them.
  10. The Brazilian crowd was terrible and they didn't support anyone who was not Brazilian. Argentinian crowd at least showed support for not-so-known countries like Zambia in field hockey. But the thing is: prices for the tickets in Rio were way higher than most people could pay, so only Brazilians from the upper middle class (or higher) could pay for the most expensive tickets. Most of these people are mostly ignorant, uneducated and morally reprehensible -- they believe money can buy anything, so they don't really care about the consequences of their actions. I am deeply ashamed of them. But when Argentina had the chance to host the Olympics with free tickets, which means everybody could enjoy all sports a bit, this old and senseless feud between Brazil and Argentina could still be seen, while we should support each other instead. A very minor complaint, as I said, but a complaint, nevertheless.
  11. So, earns the last gold medal of the Games. lost the chance to reach the top 10 in the medal table, unfortunately. From the "outside", the Games seemed to have really good organization! I'm impressed! Argentina sometimes let the old rivalry against Brazil get the best ot them (especially in futsal final, when many people wore ARG jerseys and cheered against Brazil) but this is a very very minor complaint. Congratulations to Argentina for an awesome event!
  12. What a massive shock to see Argentina lose the bronze medal match in futsal! Congratulations, Egypt! Excellent result for an African nation!
  13. I only joined Totallympics because I wanted to know more about the qualification systems for the 2014 YOG and I couldn't find any info about that. It's weird to think I've been around for almost 5 years now. It doesn't look this much time, really.
  14. It's almost anticlimactic to her our first gold medal in the second to last day. I believe the climax of the Olympics is before the end of the first week, and the last days are kind of sad because we're usually coming to terms with the fact it will be over soon. Anyway, nice to earn a gold medal, and another gold medal seems likely tomorrow, so I can't complain.
  15. Her Amanar was definitely not ready, but the Silivas was pretty good. What an unfortunate moment to get injured. I wish her a speedy recovery. She's Romania's only hope, in my opinion, for good results (at least until 2020).
  16. Nice! There's hope for Fernando Reis, then. He finished 5th at the 2016 Summer Olympics, and both the gold and silver medalists had been banned for doping before, so... Just joking. In all honesty, even though weightlifting has zero visibility in Brazil, it's still nice to watch and it's easy to get easily excited about. But I always have the impression I'm being deceived, so I don't even force myself to watch it anymore. Some nations should be banned for 10 years or more from this sport.
  17. Our flagbearer at the opening won a bronze-medal bout in boxing. Now, I hate boxing, but I sympathize with the kid: he had a lot of pressure on him, first for being the flagbearer, and second because he's the grandson of ServĂlio de Oliveira, who won the first Olympic medal in boxing for Brazil (a bronze medal in 1968). The biggest media coverage in Brazil around the YOG was about him, so I can imagine how hard it must have been for the poor kid. (Professinal) Boxing was huge when I was younger, and even today it has its loyal supporters in Brazil (especially in the Northeastern region of the country). So, we'll end up with 13 medals (11 medals now + 2 finals, one in boxing and one in futsal), a surprising number considering I expected 5 medal at most before the Games started. It's nice to see youth sport is not dead in Brazil.
  18. Sri Lanka eliminated China in Archery. What a big surprise!
  19. Scoring in diving is very open-ended. This is why I don't like diving, even though I love gymnastics. You can't dish out scores as you want in gymnastics; it has to follow a specific code of points where each and every deduction is clearly noted. It's not perfect, but at least it's not as crazy as diving is.
  20. Back to rhythmic gymnastics now, and the girl from Armenia is SPECTACULAR.
  21. Karate not only had the most ridiculous rules for Qualification (at least one continent should be represented per gender, not per weight), they also have a ridiculous rule for allowing two bronze medals. 8 athletes compete, 4 get a medal. This is stupid. This is the sport I mostly dislike at the Olympics, and even in their first-ever appearance they cannot get things right.
  22. Iceland got their first ever Olympic gold medal. Nice.
  23. The top 3 had better times than she had. Nice for her, though. And another medal for Brazil. 2 medals in 1 hour. I can't complain.
