ahjfcshfghb reacted to heywoodu in Cross-Country Skiing 2021 - 2022 Discussion Thread
She got a 242 or so in Campra, maybe she thinks one sub-300 is enough? I mean, that'd be very poor reading of the rules, but I can't think of another explanation other than "Nah never mind, don't want to go anyway"...
Who knows, maybe if this doesn't work out for Ponya and Hungary has to give back their quota, that one and Thailand's second spot are the first two returned spots on the way to a third Brazilian ticket, possibly making this whole mess of the past two months a moot point

If my calculations are correct (and luckily this season so far they generally are), that should result in these points:
Jaque 103,36 Bruna 186,36 Mika 218,28 Duda 241,58
Putting Bruna roughly 140 points ahead of Duda in the internal ranking now (I'll wait a little with that until the points are on the FIS website and I enter them in my table)!

All other Brazilians are on there as well (two of whom are still on their way from Poland), which should mean that the federation won't suddenly decide not to count these races. You never know, but that seems good...

Malinin can apparently land 4T+4T (!!) in practice. USFS are crazy. Everyone on the board should get fired.

Interesting, since earlier today 'we' were told that the races are likely to be cancelled....
Do you know if there is any way to contact this TSK Ravno Gorac/Ravnogorac? I tried an email last week, but got no answer.
By the way, she arrived in Zlatibor last night after a 19-hour trip, and this morning was told she wasn't registered for the races by the Brazilian federation. Apparently the 'coach' of the team had told the federation's 'registration guy' "No, nobody is going to Serbia ". Luckily it seems she managed to solve this right on time with help of the (very friendly and very helpful!) Serbian organization, if she had arrived today it would have been too late...
It's now going to come down to this for the second ticket, basically:
1) Bruna in Zlatibor vs Duda in Zakopane during the week
2) Whoever vs whoever (not sure yet) in Ravna Gora (if not cancelled), Bad Mitterndorf (AUT) or, most likely, Zweisimmen-Sparenmoos (SUI) during the final weekend

If I were Malinin I'd start asking myself if I wouldn't rather skate for Uzbekistan tbh...

Expected decision on the one hand, but nonetheless a ridiculous and embarassing one for many reasons.
If Walsh/Michaud plan to continue skating together, I hope they will seriously consider switching citizenship and go somewhere they are respected and appreciated.

will not send any athletes to the 2022 Olympics. One might think it’s because they didn’t qualify anyone because no North Korean athlete has left the country since the pandemic began, but officially they are not attending the Olympics in order to protest the United States-led diplomatic boycott.

Oh no, this means we will not have the neverending funeral psalms or whatever was that thing they were trying to sing in PyeongChang 4 years ago, performed by the only and only wise and respected leader Kim Jong-Un´s anti-imperialist cheerleaders corps this time in the stands

The women's qualifying is basically done since Sapporo & Zao won't be replaced. Therefore this nation list should be more or less official. The places are not for specific names but it's easy to guess Daniela Haralambie & Frida Westman will be the and nominations.
Nicole Konderla & Kinga Rajda should be the two selections.

These points show the situation fairly clearly. Bruna needs a distance race to improve her points, Duda needs one or two sprints to really make a change.
And you're really not going to get a 'team coach' favouring one athlete over the other any more obviously than the Brazilian one at this very moment. Take these two events:
Slavic Cup Zakopane, 11 and 12 January (sprint and distance)
Balkan Cup Zlatibor, 12 and 13 January (distance and sprint)
They are now actually planning to go to both of these events.....and only do the sprints! "But I need a distance race" is literally being answered with "but she needs sprints, so we're doing sprints"
It really can't get any more blatantly obvious. Both Zakopane and Zlatibor aren't entirely sure of actually happening yet neither, so deciding where to go on your own is a hard dilemma to say the least....(since you simply can't trust going with the team, they/the 'coach' are not above actively sabotaging you)
Working your ass off for four years and in the end it's going to come down to incredibly dirty games being played by someone who is supposed to be there for the entire team. It is truly beyond infuriating.

She was registered for and skipped today's freestyle race in Latvia (Madona), and suddenly I see she appeared in Campra in Switzerland today, where it appears she scored an excellent 241 points!

And Baiba Bendika won the race

Maria Cecilia Dominguez of Argentina got an amazing 110 points in Turkey today. Argentina has one female ticket and the deciding criteria was easy: the one with the best FIS points - all races count, including rollerskiing and 'obscure' races - goes to the Olympics. Alright, clear enough and with a second or so to spare in the last rollerskiing race in Brazil, Dominguez moved up to first:
So today's 110 improved her points to 124 or so. Hooooooowever.....now all of a sudden, criteria have changed: Dominguez has been told she will need to get the A criteria (under 100 points, near-impossible) in order to be sent by the Argentinian federation (FASA). If she doesn't, whoever is in second place will be sent to the Olympics (A criteria or not).
It's basically like saying "runner A, you need to run the marathon in 2:10 to qualify, but runner B, you can go as long as runner A doesn't get that time and you have a time of 3:00 or so". It's...insane.

I've seen plenty unfair situations with federations. But this one is on top of a ridiculous ranking. She is the only Argentinian paying full costs in the fight for the ticket. Zero support (and it's not like a season is cheap ☝🏻). THAT without mentioning that she was the only Argentinian trying to get an Olympic quota for her country in the previous World Championship. No one else wanted to go to Oberstdorf. She did it! Only Argentinian, without any support, and still good enough to stay under 300 points by 2 seconds or so and get a quota to have someone representing her country at the Olympics. And now, this bulshit from FASA all because this federation wants to send someone younger at any costs. If the youngest girls were better than her, fine! BUT THEY ARE NOT!

And just to add more to the drama of Russian Nationals, at yesterday's women's SP the judges placed 15-year-old Muravieva (not eligible for Beijing) 2nd.
World Champion Shcherbakova was up next and was placed 3rd. But, the rankings were later changed. Muravieva was deducted one point for going over time limit. Deducting points way after someone's performance is of course against all regulations, but hey, we are talking about Russian Nationals here. It's to be expected.
Anyways, looks like Valieva, Trusova and Shcherbakova are going to Beijing, with Valieva being an enormous gold medal favorite.

Not sure if it's coincidence, but while she was a DNF in the IBU Cup Thursday (and not on the start list yesterday), all of a sudden she is in the freestyle mass start in St Ulrich today, her first XC race since those worlds in February! Yesterday she wasn't in the classic individual start, so it's kind of like she all of a sudden went there..
Not sure it went right though, since she was ahead of a Mexican who has now finished, whereas Ponya has disappeared from the timing after the last intermediate (where she was already pretty far behind, under 300 wasn't gonna happen).
