Attila Valter was 3rd on the final stage of the Tour de Catalogne, which probably doesn't seem much for others, but for Hungarian cycling this is huge. It's been ages since we had anyone notable in road cycling. (Okay, not ages, but László Bodrogi's WCh medals from the 2000s feel like a distant memorable at this point.)

Men's Handball Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
Vektor replied to VolleyRuller96's topic in Handball
I kanda want us to win the SOG bidding for once just to see what they would do with us in the team events as we are nowhere near ready to compete in those outside of handball and water polo. Okay, basketball and men's football would probably be fine, even if we would lose all the matches, but the rest... yikes. Like, women's football would be embarrassing for us, just a few months ago we had a 0-8 against Sweden. -
And also, here are differences between Rio and Tokyo in terms of athlete numbers from best to worst. +10 +4 +3 +2 +1 0 -1 -2 -4 -5 -7 -11 Obviously the zonal qualifiers can still change a lot.
-
If I am not mistaken, these are the number of athletes per nations before the zonal qualifiers: 18 athletes 16 athletes 14 athletes 11 athletes 10 athletes 8 athletes 7 athletes 6 athletes 4 athletes 3 athletes 2 athletes 1 athlete 32 NOCs have qualified so far.
-
This was the Olympic ranking before Doha I think both and needed a medal at the very least for the quota.
-
Meanwhile in the men's both Choupenitch and Siess made it to the Top16, they need medals.
-
Hanna Lyczbinska (POL) Needs T16 Irem Karamete (TUR) Needs T8 Martyna Synoradzka (POL) Needs T8 Martyna Jelinska (POL) Needs bronze Maria Boldor (ROU) Needs silver Krystina Petrova (UKR) Needs gold Maria-Eleni Chaldaiou (GRE) Needs gold We are down to two, Karamete in in the Top16, Synoradzka is in the Top32.

Men's Handball Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
Vektor replied to VolleyRuller96's topic in Handball
Eh, I would complain about this no matter what, as I have been for decades now. If anything, we got more than lucky how the team qualifications went for us this time, I don't feel that much frustration about us not qualifying in men's handball. Croatia not being at the Games is much more infuriating, as is Denmark missing in women's handball. As is South Africa getting two team quotas in water polo literally by default. -

Sure, I wouldn't be against to have "world qualifiers" for those events instead of continental qualifiers. -
Men's Handball Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
Vektor replied to VolleyRuller96's topic in Handball
The Olympics should first and foremost be about the celebration of the best athletes in the world, and it's just not fair for many top athletes to miss the event because Africa needed to be part of every team competition, no matter how weak they are in some cases. Maybe it would be fine with 16 spots or more, like at the World Championships, but it just doesn't work well with 12 or less teams. I also find it funny how most of the time the people who are in favor of the current system are from outside of Europe. It's easy to support these continental quotas when your teams aren't missing because of them most of the time. -

Personally I just made an example with handball because that's where the conversation is. I would say that handball has one of the best qualification systems, it's the best one can make when team sports are forced to have mandatory continental representation. -
Men's Handball Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
Vektor replied to VolleyRuller96's topic in Handball
For example, I would just shift the 4 continental quotas to the WCh, which would mean that the Top5 nations at the WCh qualify for the Games, while the rest plays out similar to the original qualification system: Qualified from 2019 WCh: OQT Group #1: OQT Group #2: OQT Group #3: This looks much better for me. -
Men's Handball Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
Vektor replied to VolleyRuller96's topic in Handball
It makes sense for individual sports to have continental quotas, but I have always found them ridiculous for team events. We have a very limited number of teams, which means that every time a weak team qualifies thanks to the mandatory continental representation the quality of the tournament significantly drops. Have the hosts and then pick the 11 best teams in the world. That's how it should be in every team event. -
@OlympicsFan Okay, it looks like you will be right about Milák and 100m freestyle. Apparently Csaba Sós will announce the Hungarian Olympic Swimming team on Wednesday, and there are two events where he will leave one spot open for now: men's 200m freestyle and men's 200m medley. Which means that he must be considering Milák for 200m freestyle, and I very much doubt that he would have Milák up for 4 individual events. The two open spots exist mostly because Cseh and Kozma were weak at the National Championships and they need to improve ASAP.
-
btw, Milák said today that he will try "all" the events (in freestyle and butterfly) at the ECh, he will even swim in 400m freestyle. He also said that the Games will have a less risky program from him, so probably the two butterfly events and maybe one in freestyle (plus the relays if we will be in the final).

You don't need to be snarky, I know it well what's expected from the Hungarian swimmers. Just because Németh failed during the Olympic cycle to cross the 48 line, it doesn't mean it's not expedited from him at the most important event of the past 5 years. From every senior Hungarian swimmer it's expected from them to have either a SB or PB at the Games (depending on where they are in their career) and to give their absolute best at the one event the country cares about, and if Németh can't do it, that will be a disappointment. As for Milák, it will depend on what happens at the ECh in May (if there will be an ECh), he seems to be more focused on the 100m distance than before, and he expressed disappointment over his 100m freestyle time, meaning that he feels he's capable of more.
-
Final post from the Hungarian Championships: Kristóf Milák, men's 100m butterfly - 50.47 NR That's obviously not enough against Dressel, but he's looking really fast on the shorter distances compared to 2019, with this time he can potentially win a silver in Tokyo. And one more interesting note: Milák is breaking his records / PBs in the morning sessions. Our National Championships had their finals in the morning sessions to prepare for the ridiculous time schedule of Tokyo and Milák already seems to be ready for giving his best in the early hours.

Swimming Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
Vektor replied to vinipereira's topic in Swimming
Hubert Kós, men's 100m butterfly, 51.52 Unless I am mistaken, this is his first OQT in this event. We now have 4 swimmers with OQT in men's 100m butterfly. -
I have been watching swimming for over two decades now and if there's one thing I know is that most promising/young Hungarian swimmers achieve PB times at the Games or at the Worlds, and both of the swimmers are still very young, Milák was born in 2000, Németh was born in 1999, meaning that optimally they should still improve for their first Olympic Games. They are already breaking or close to breaking their PBs in March, 4 months away from the event where they should be in peak form. That doesn't mean that they will certainly go under 48, Milák might even find 100m freestyle too risky if 200m butterfly turns out to be very competitive, but I am not sure why it would seem such an unlikely scenario. I am sure both Milák and Németh will be very disappointed if their times won't start with 47 at the Games, that will be the target from their coaches.

Not a good day for us, but this event once again indicated for me that Michelle Gulyás is the "future of women's pentathlon" for Hungary. Great swimming and laser run for her, if she has a good day in fencing and riding (which she didn't this time), she can already be very competitive among the seniors.
-
Both Milák and Németh are capable to go under 48, and so far no one has missed an Olympic or WCh final with a time like that since they banned those swimsuits.
-
The paywall for such an unpopular sport is ridiculous. This World Cup event in Budapest isn't even on any Hungarian TV channels, and we are one of the few nations who actually care about this sport.
