Athing Mu has failed to make the US team for Paris after falling in the 800m trials. I must admit I'm a bit disappointed not to see the battle with Keely and Mora.. but positive news for the Brits' medal hopes.

I guess its pretty difficult to do this in America but if this was Keely or maybe even Jemma they would be put on the team no matter what.

  2. I won’t be in Paris but I’ll be watching along from home, and I’ll probably try to attend one of the fan zones on one of the days.

I think a day by day thread will probably be the best, but a sport by sport one could also be good (maybe grouping some sports) to avoid spoilers.

If anyone else is planning to watch on TV, which package would be the best to watch all the events? I got fed up with the BBC partway through Tokyo so I bought Eurosport, but they only showed a few sports meaning I still missed out on some events I wanted to watch.

If anyone wants any spreadsheets or trackers made for before the games, drop me a line and I’ll probably be able to help.

Gonna be a close contest between :GBR and :RSA. One thing that may slightly edge it for :GBR is that :RSA haven't been tested at all this tournament, whereas :GBR have faced :ESP and a spirited :CAN performance. Furthermore, :GBR have rested a lot of their quicker players and will be able to match the pace of :RSA. I still think it's too close to call though.

I've just got a sneaky feeling that it will come down to a slip on the pitch, or one misplaced pass.

  4. I don't think the qualification has been that disappointing, but I feel like a few things could/ should have gone better.

    Sports which Exceeded Expectations:

Marathon Swimming, Water Polo, Archery, Road Cycling, Skateboarding, Sport climbing,

Sports which performed poorer than expected:

Badminton, Boxing, Canoe Sprint, BMX racing, Fencing, Football,  Judo, Shooting, Table Tennis,

  5. Maybe I should wait until after the rugby but I'm mildly disappointed with qualification, especially with quite a few near misses. I think I'm probably the most frustrated with the self imposed qualification from Aquatics GB and UK Athletics, although Aquatics GB have redeemed themselves somewhat by taking all 7 relays.

The top 3 qualification misses would have to be, Men's Skeet, as that deprives the mixed team that were 2022 World Champions, not qualifying 2 riders in the men's BMX race, and Lauren Williams in Taekwondo.

I don't think there are are any sports we should add, although Breaking should definitely be taken away.

  6. Sette Colli starts on Friday,

    Start List: chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://www.federnuoto.it/settecolli-2024/settecolli-2024-documents/9471-settecolli-ip-2024-entry-list-elenco-iscritti/file.html

Full GB team as expected but no Scott in the 200m IM.

The results of the Aussie and US trials should give Freya confidence that she can mix it with them. Obviously Summer will be away and gone but neither Forrester nor Grimes looked that threatening. Obviously there is time for them to get back to their 2023 form but I'm more optimistic about Freya's chances than I was a month ago.

Agreed, although the results of the same trials should also be a big boost to Angharad, as Lilly king only swam 0.1 quicker than her, and the 2nd American swam a PB 0.6 behind Evans, and the Australians are still miles behind.

unless he destroys them all, like in Doha (remember, he swam the WR in the relay's first leg, not in the individual race)

He broke the WR in Doha swimming with lots of clean water. The next fastest time was 1.1 seconds slower. In the individual he was hit with more was and so swum 47.53. In all of his sub 47 swims he has swum with virtually no wash, which won't happen in Paris if the other teams target him.

Fortunately the Olympics won’t follow the times of the trials precisely. China for instance perform certainly doesn’t follow a uniform pattern looking at previous champs. I expect Aus will be much faster than trials. US favs of course, but Brits will be hopeful of pushing them close.

The issue for China is that if all the other nations put their strongest swimmers on the same leg as Pan, presumably 1st, then the Chinese team would lose a fair chunk of time compared to if he was swimming alone.

Would certainly be a shock medal. I don’t think any of us had forecasted this one (nor swimming media channels I follow). I really hope the women’s squad come away with something individually, would be a nice boost for the continued development of the programme. Freya C in the 400 IM is the only one I really believe is a genuine chance.

I'm starting to tend more to Angharad rather than Freya, just because of the Nature of their events. Angharad is ranked 8th in the world since the start of 2023, but moved to 6th when considering who will be in Paris.

Freya is 5th, 4th as Kaylee isn't swimming it, but she probably has a weaker trajectory, and is still 2s behind bronze. Forrester (3rd) was dealing was something at Aussie champs so her time there isn't really representative. (4.38).

Overall, I just feel like the 100m breast is more inconsistent internationally than the 400m IM, where Summer is just miles away from the rest of the world.

Anyone got any idea what time she would probably have to go to make an Olympic final in the individual?

1.06.31 made the final in Fukuoka, Angharad would have won Silver,

1.06.40 made it in Budapest, where Angharad would have won Gold.

1.06.59 made it in Tokyo, where she would have tied for bronze.

By my reckoning that time is pretty safe for a final, but I think she would need to drop into the 1.04's to get into medal contention, which isn't that unlikely.

She absolutely smashed it as well. Very promising for her down in the 65s.

I'm pretty sure she came back in close to or under WR pace, so if she can improve her early speed......

I would assume she will be competing at Sette Colli next week with the rest of the squad, so we'll se what else she can do.

On the subject of :GBR , day 1 is going to be important. If Tarling wins gold (and he defintely has a chance) it could be an amazing Games for GB.

Any medal is better than the start of Tokyo, although that was down more to scheduling. By my count, we have chances in Both time trials, Men's Rugby 7's (if we qualify), women's 3m springboard synchro and the men's 4x100m free. Maybe even the mixed Air Rifle, although it is very hard to judge given the event is pretty unpredictable, let alone our athletes.

I'll be happy with 2 medals and and gold would be a bonus. What would be nice would be to win a medal in the 1st event, which would either be the diving or shooting, to set the team up nicely.

Are you certain about it? Why GB would refuse the quota?

I don’t know why they would refuse, but the commentator mentionned it, and I checked on their website and it said we are going for a second mens quota for today but didn’t mention a womens, presumably because our C1 male won’t do the extreme event. Setchell could certainly medal though so it is a bit strange.

I can't explain how devastating the results are for :CZE 😞😞😞. This was the last chance for Vít Prindis to go to the Olympics at least once in a life. In the women's final, the disqualification for Czech was really on the edge. Can't say whether the disqualification is 100% correct or not but really devastating for the Czech team for no earning any quota 😭😭😭

She'll get the quota as GB aren't taking it.

2022 was a non-Olympic Euros, so you can't really compare the two.

But even with a stronger team in Munich, at the same point in 2022 we only had 2 bronze medals.

I think heading into the championships looking at the entry lists it was expected for the total medals to be down. Looking at the general picture I don't think is unfair to say that the team is in a better position than 2 years ago.

Let's hope the home crowd in Birmingham combined with it not being an olympic year in 2026 will produce some more silverware.

  18. Louie Hinchcliffe was very impressive but again it is about double peaking. The way he finished that 100m, makes me think he would be a better 200m runner, and that event probably has worse depth than the 200m both in the UK and internationally.
