That’s why I am crossing my fingers.. she managed to cut 2 sec in this competition so her progress is huge, I am optimistic but not expecting anything special for now

And how long did it take her to cut 2 seconds? Any chance that it took her 2 years to improve by 2 seconds ... ?

Question for Hungarian fans and other swimming fans as well. Considering her times at the European Championships, how well you think Hosszu will do at the Olympics? Would she able to improve her time that is good enough to win gold medals again?

1) Impossible to say (no one knows her plans).

2) My guess: She won’t medal in the 200 IM, but in the 400 IM she should medal and maybe even win gold.

3) Any medal at her age would be a good achievement.

I think most Hungarians will/would be disappointed if she doesn't win both 200IM and 400IM, but that's mostly because everyone got used to seeing her win these two events every time (well, except at this ECh, ofc).

I think the best case scenario is a repeat of Egerszegi in Atlanta. We were expecting two gold medals from Egerszegi because of her dominance 4 years ago (you can hear how disappointed the Hungarian commentator was when she lost 400IM), and in the end she won a gold and a bronze. I would be more than satisfied with a similar end to Hosszú's career. She can and will improve after this ECh, but so will everyone else, and most of her opponents are much younger then her.

For anyone not watching the British coverage, the BBC commentators are making a lot of fuss over the fact that the GB team are in heavy training and not peaking for this competition

Good to hear that they are delusional as usual. Also really impressive for Greenbank to swim PBS in both events while being in heavy training. Also James Guy swimming his fastest time in 4 years while being in heavy training. Also Renshaw swimming a PB while being in heavy training ...

I would imagine that’s the case for nearly all medal contenders. There’s some who may be targeting Olympic qualification and for youngsters this might be their season goal but anyone who wants to medal in Tokyo will be nowhere near their peak now

Whether Hungarians will be disappointed has no relevance for making predictions. In the 200 IM she seems to be too far away. In 2016 she improved less than a second from the European championships to the Olympics, this year she would have to improve by at least 2 seconds. In the 400 IM anything is possible.

If Britain win 10 gold medals in Tokyo I hope you'll send a written apology to them? :d

1) 10 gold medals across all sports would be bad for GB and in swimming alone it is obviously impossible.

2) Best case for GB in Tokyo: 12 medals, 3 or 4 of them in gold. Realistic result: 8-10 medals, 2-3 golds.

Interesting. That's a lot lower than I would predict and I'm usually very pessimistic.

I would predict 10-14 golds including 1 or 2 in swimming,

    • Earlier today, Taiwan beat the USA    Of course it's car from the best US tram but it's still a big deal for Taiwanese baseball
    • And even here we lose to France? I really don't know what's the point of organizing the Olympics if you can't make progress in practically any sport. France has the Olympics in 2030 and there they will definitely prepare 100%, just like for Paris. We can't do that. It's obvious that in ski jumping we have no chance of winning medals, but decency dictates that we should at least win here with a France like that.
    • There is no snow in Lillehammer
    • Finally the ski jumping season begins 11 teams in the (real) mixed team competition, no Switzerland.
    • Most of our athletes are constantly bothered by something: the pressure to qualify, the miss of pressure when they have already qualified, etc. It's the same in football: at the beginning of the season they are a poor form becouse of a little played and at the end of the season they are tired. They are always looking for excuses. A real champion always plays at a high level, like Sinner, and doesn`t look for 1000 excuses for his poor performance.
    • Think it is mentally difficult for the two teams with the Olympic place guaranteed and the pressure off, whereas everyone else is absolutely playing at 110%.  I'm sure things will be better once they get to Milan.
    • There's no point in cheating, these were terrible European Championships for us. Retronaz out of form, Constantini with a huge number of big mistakes. Only illness can excuse it... We've probably lost the last 10 matches with Switzerland... It looks like Constantini had the tournament of her life in mixed doubles in 2022 in Beijing and she will never reach this level again.
    • What good is it to us if we took 4th place and lost an important match? If Constantini was sick, I forgive her, but I'm afraid that the Italian team will not exceed a certain level. Yes, they have made progress since 2022, but they lack that one decisive step to become a class team. Here we lost all important matches with teams at our/higher level: Sui x2, Sco x2, Swe. We only won with the one we were supposed to win with. I don't believe in a medal for this team in Cortina. After 2022, it seemed that Constantini could dominate women's curling, but it didn't happen that way. After Sinner's recent successes, I opened my eyes a bit and started to demand more from our athletes, coaches, and officials. I have no intention of being satisfied with 4th place, because with this approach, you won't achieve anything great.
    • play their best, but only get 1, so  get bronze 6-4!
    • Oh dear, once again a 50% shot from Constantini when she needed 100%.   blank the end & go into the 10th with the Hammer of Thor.
