What happened?

Janeth Gomez was a medal favorite in 59kg and by form a silver at last bronze. Lifters above us are either going to be suspended or having injuries and in terrible form. With Mexico being allowed just 2 per gender, she should have gone. They chose Ana Lopez in 55kg (no medal chance)  and Aremi Zavala in 76kg not in form currently but has 3rd  best lift among all.

Gomez did well in the last tournament in Colombia but they didn't change their decision. Now the lifter behind Gomez from Ecuador is a medal favorite despite finishing behind the Mexican.

Oh, weightlifting :d

Yeah, no quota or medal in any sport A is going to make up for anything in sport B. Maybe for general fans, but definitely not for the people involved (i.e. the athletes) :p

Mexico lost a sure Olympic medal yesterday due to some terrible decision. Not sure if a rythmic gymnastics qualifications could have healed it or if people in Mexico care

Well, Mexico did qualify, but in individual rhythmic gymnastics. This is the first time Mexico qualifies in this sport, either in individual or group, so it's a historic moment and one their gymnastics federation has been waiting for 37 years. Also, Mexico qualified for the first time also in trampoline, so the country has qualified in all gymnastics disciplines!

Now, I'm pretty sure this doesn't heal the shock of losing a sure medal.

And maybe this is not the first it's happening in Mexican Sports. Favouritism seems to be there in a couple of mexican sports federations , maybe across all countries but it's terrible when athletes don't get rewarded despite being deserved. It used to happen in india during asian games some political influence and you qualify for some sports like pencak Silat and all but who cares it's more like doesn't matter, shouldn't happen at least for Olympics.

Well, I agree with you. People in Mexico doesn’t care about other sports than football (and to a minor extent baseball, boxing & diving) so they probably didn’t knew our girls were fighting for a spot.

As for the decision in weightlifting, I think the federation is to blame, as they should have monitored better every single lifter making it to the national teams. I would hope the president of the federation could be sacked after this debacle, but he probably is another protegé of that scum we have as Sports Director.

Apparently the Oceanian qualifier did not count? @thiago_simoes

Mexico in?

The latest information is that they're still debating about which individual from Australia will take the quota since the second-place gymnast protested the results. Nothing has been said about groups, but I believe the results have not been contested.

It's been widely assumed at this point that no matter what happens the quotas will still go to Oceania in order to respect the universality principle.

shameful decision in the Italian team...

despite having won all the direct matchups (last one, this weekend at the Italian Nationals) against Alexandra Agiurgiuculese and being the best among our girls in the international competitions earlier this year, Sofia Raffaeli has been left home by our coaches...

in the individual event in Tokyo, Milena Baldassari and Alexandra Agiurgiuculese will represent Italy...

This is completely absurd. Agiurgiuculese didn't deserve to qualify. As far as I understand, the national team coordinator is minimizing this decision saying that Raffaeli is still young and Paris will come soon, but this sport is very hard on the body of gymnasts and no one knows whether Raffaeli will even continue to train until 2024. Terrible decision and now I can't force myself to cheer for Italy in Tokyo anymore, unfortunately.

    • I read now that Valentina Rodini will be in the new team of Tizzano + Galtarossa and Martini. I was probably in such an information bubble on Instagram that I thought that only Abbagnale was running a campaign and had a team of people around him. That's why I was surprised by his defeat + the fact that, for example, Rodini supports his rival. But as I wrote, for me the change in the general coach position is a plus. We need a new opening and a new impulse: Cattaneo had his best results in Tokyo and then he only explained that his rowers were running away abroad to the USA to study and that's why he had worse results. Ok, except that it's the same in Romania and Greece but they results are comparable or better. It's obvious that no one here will make the UK or the Netherlands, because we don't have such resources and money but I think we can repeat the Romanian results (2 gold - 3 silver in Paris) and that will be a much better result than the 2 silver in this year.
    • Abbagnale boasted that he had 80 per cent a few days before the vote (I still have the screen) and ran again as a result of a power deal. Not a great loss.   I have doubts about the new technical director though, you can't announce him during the congress, brandishing the scalp of the Abbagnale era technical staff (who then, were Crispi's men). Let's hope there are no rifts between the new staff and the athletes, it had to be handled better.
    • I was surprised by Abbagnale's defeat. I thought he was a sure of victory, since he decided to run - I read some source that he didn't know if he would start before Paris 2024. What do you think about it?

    • Cattaneo was good but his peak was in Tokyo 2021. Then there was such stabilization - stagnation. In Paris the result was in line with expectations but without the wow effect. They threw everything that was best into the quadruple sculls and it was enough for a only silver. Now without the lightweight sculls in LA I think that radical changes are needed to remain competitive. Previously there was a 3-year Olympic cycle due to Covid, so big changes weren`t good but now I think the time is right. Although of course more funds are needed for this sport in Italy, because even the best coach will not overcome this vel our men`s alpine skiing sector

    • Davide Tizzano (1996 Olympic Champion, men's double sculls) is the new President of the Italian Federation, as he defeated the (now former) President Giuseppe Abbagnale by a very small margin (52% to 48%) in last week's federal elections   and he's already at work to make up for the last 8 disappointing years (at least in terms of Olympic success): his first move is bringing back home  Antonio Colamonaci  who made  great in the past 8 years   https://www.oasport.it/2024/11/canottaggio-cambia-la-direzione-tecnica-dellitalia-arriva-il-guru-che-ha-reso-grande-la-romania/   let's see if he can make  great again, now
