Well I know none of them, so spill it, who is Mr Superstar in this match? :d

Denis Bakala played at World Juniors a couple of years ago for us but in the bottom defensive pairs

So you're saying if he were to switch nationality :NED, he'd be the best Dutch player of the past 20 years, right, got it!

I guess all the decent players of that age are on pro contracts & thus ineligible.  Even in :GBR only a few University teams in any sport are heading to international kevel.

Oh well, that's often the level of university sports in general, apart from those 3-4 countries that take it somewhat seriously :p (and the main one isn't even there of course)

I actually can appreciate this tournament more if it’s just a bunch of university level players getting an international experience they otherwise wouldn’t without this tournament. I think those are the players this event should be for in some ways (developmental for younger athletes or last hurray for older athletes unlikely to compete at a higher level).

It’s like how :USA sends actual service members to the CISM Military World Games, instead of some hand-picked athletes from the special elite training group set up to help them fund their Olympic journey.

Different countries do different things.  The old Communist countries usually take FISU very seriously & send strong teams.   Here in :GBR we have one recognised Sports University, and others which have specific programmes which produce lots of international athletes, like obviously Oxford & Cambridge in Rowing or Stirling in Swimming.  Otherwise our young Olympic-track athletes are kept on the circuit where they are earning international points for FIS, ISU etc.  Probably the only :GBR athletes here who really have serious ambitions for the future will be the two Curling teams, because there aren't that many serious international Curling competitions out there.

But it's still fun, because all sport is good when it is between athletes on the same level.  Doesn't have to involve Messi & Benzema to be exciting.

Meanwhile I'm still trying to navigate the FISU.tv site to figure out where to watch :p

There are 4 Channels that don't start till the Opening Ceremony tomorrow, and three basic channels just for the hockey prelims, but only one is working now, labelled Cheel Arena.

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.
