By the way if it helps anyone’s predictions GB have agreed to allow a women’s football team to compete at the Olympics if they qualify, however they will not send a men’s team if they qualify.

Yes I totally forgot about them hosting the WC and will no doubt get help along the way. But it'll be difficult from then on to qualify in future games. With AUS and NZL joining the fray and with Iran, Philippines showing improvement.

Did they give an explanation why it would be ok for british women to have a team and not for men ? I'm curious.

Yes, basically it is much more important for the exposure of women's football and FA's of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland agreed. For the men Premier league football clubs opposed an additional tournament and it was not deemed as important for the exposure of the sport.

Australia or New Zealand will get an Oceania spot.

AUS and NZL joining the WC qualifiers has nothing to the with the Olympic qualification, they are not competing with the Asian teams for the Olympic spot. and I don't think they ever change that for the future games.

hard to predict future games but the future doesn't look bright for Iran when our veterans retire. Philippines on other hands sometimes get good results against World Class teams. but China as world cup hosts will be seeded and will face easier teams in the 1st round means better chance to finish higher than any other Asian team.

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.
