Nilsson and Ustiugov win opening stage of Tour de Ski

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C1A9R05XAAAh8GW.jpg:large

Stina Nilsson (SWE) and Sergey Ustiugov (RUS) have won the opening stage of the 11th FIS Tour de Ski.  Both athletes were untouchable in the 1.5 km free technique sprint competition.  They were each the fastest qualifiers of the day and in the end the best on the day.

Following Nilsson onto the ladies' podium was a pair of Norwegian athletes.  Maiken Caspersen Falla took second place +2.48 seconds off the lead with Heidi Weng in third +6.47 seconds back.  Nilsson and Falla have now won the last 9 sprint competitions the longest streak ever between two athletes in the sprint event.

Nilsson will carry a +10.7 second lead into tomorrow's stage two 5km mass start in classic technique.  Weng sits 3rd in the standings +16.6 seconds back.  There will be bonus seconds available for the ladies on the first lap for the first 10 athletes and again in the finish for the top 3.

Italy's Federico Pellegrino followed Ustiugov on to the podium in second place today for his first podium of the season.  He finished +2.03 second back just ahead of Norway's Finn Haagen Krogh who was +2.80 behind the Russian.

Ustiugov now leads the Tour after one stage by +8.2 seconds.  Tour favourites along with Ustiugov will have some time to make up over the coming stages.  Krogh sits in 3rd place +13.8, Martin Johnsrud Sundby in 4th (NOR) +17.0, Alex Harvey (CAN) in 6th +27.6 and Dario Cologna (SUI) in 13th +47.9.  The men will be back in action tomorrow on stage 2 with a 10 km mass start classic with bonus seconds available on lap 2 of 4 and in the finish like the ladies.

Ustiugov increases Tour leader with stage 2 victory

  https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C1FfzChWIAApMAD.jpg:large

Sergey Ustiugov of Russia has won the men's 10 km classic mass start competition on stage two of the 2017 FIS Tour de Ski.  The demanding 2.5 km course stretched the 79 person field out and heading into the final lap the lead group was down to about 20, which quickly became less than 15 as the field reacted to the strong attack from Ustiugov with less than 1 km remaining.  In the end of was Martin Johnsrud Sundby of Norway who took second +1.9 seconds back with Didrik Toenseth also from Norway for third +2.3 seconds behind.

Switzerland's Dario Cologna thrilled the home crowd as he skied near the front for the entire race.  Two misses with his left pole on the final climb destroyed his momentum and thwarted a strong push for a podium position and he settled for 5th place +5.5 seconds off the lead.

Today's victory increased the overall Tour lead for Ustiugov heading into the first rest day of the Tour shifts to Oberstdorf, Germany for stages 3 and 4.  With his second place finish today Sundby now trails Ustiugov in second place by +18.9 seconds.  Another strong performance from Canada's Alex Harvey has moved him into third place in the overall standings +59.6 seconds behind.  Cologna move his way up from 13th place after stage 1 to now sit in 6th position.  Sweden's Marcus Hellner was also a mover jumping from 18th in the standings after the sprint to 9th now after a 7th place finish in today's competition.  Tour favourite Finn Haagen Krogh has a tough day on stage 2 and fell from second place after the sprint to now sit 11th in the overall standings.

The Tour will resume January 3-4 with a Skiathlon competition on stage 3 and a free technique Pursuit on stage 4 in Oberstdorf.

Oestberg gets her revenge with 5 km win

Ladies podium 5km Tour de Ski

Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg of Norway got her personal revenge today in the ladies' 5 km classic mass start.  After a disappointing first stage sprint result she was very motivated to go out and get herself a victory on stage two.  With her win today by 7 seconds over her teammate Heidi Weng, Oestberg has taken over the Tour lead by 10.3 seconds also ahead of Weng.  Sweden's Stina Nilsson who led the Tour after day one struggled to maintain the early pace of Oestberg, Weng and Finland's Krista Parmakoski but fought hard to take 5th place.  She remains in third place in the overall standings.  Parmakoski took third place in the 5 km classic +11.4 behind Oestberg's winning time of 13:21.2 and now sits 4th in the overall standings.

Switzerland's Nadine Faendrich known best for her sprint abilities especially in the sprint prologue recorded her best World Cup finish ever with a 4th place result today.  She was joined by her teammate Laurien van Der Graaf in the top 10 another personal best for a Swiss sprinter in a distance event.  Finland's Anne Kylloenen sat 29th after stage 1 and skied to a 6th place finish today moving her up to 14th in the overall standings.

Nilsson takes back Tour lead in Oberstdorf

  https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C1PoZK7XgAA2rjx.jpg:large

Sweden's Stina Nilsson records her first ever World Cup win with a stunning stage 3 victory in the FIS Tour de Ski Skiathlon competition in Oberstdorf, Germany.  With the Top 10 athletes separated by just 12 seconds it was one closest ladies' mass start competitions we have seen in years.  Nilsson put on a big push on the final climb and only the USA's Jessie Diggins was able to respond with her.  Norway's Heidi Weng and Maiken Caspersen Falla fought hard to keep it close but in the end it was Diggins just +0.2 behind Nilsson for second place with Weng in there for third +1.5 back.  It was another top 10 full of many nations.  Norway, Sweden, Finland and the USA were represented twice along with one from Russia and Germany.

Along with her win today Nilsson has moved into the overall lead again for the second time this Tour after winning the stage 1 sprint competition in Val Müstair, Switzerland.  She now leads Weng by 4 seconds and Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg by 12.4 seconds to round out the top 3.  Finland's Krista Parmakoski continues to sit 4th in the overall and is actually closer to the lead after picking up the most bonus seconds out on course on the second lap of the competition.  She is +38.7 back heading into tomorrow's 10 km Pursuit in free technique.  With the top 20 ladies separated by just 90 seconds it should be a very exciting pursuit competition.

    • And not at all by decades of neglect of fire hazards by incompetent Marxist politicians, no sirreee bob.  Everyone knows it is wind that causes fires, which is why we get so many in the north of Scotland.
    • Southern California is currently experiencing one of the worst fire events in my lifetime caused by an extreme wind event
    • Still deciding, but NHL, NFL, NBA, club volleyball (as usual), Gim-Kim in some Korean Curling event, GSOC WFG Masters, Women’s U18 World Championships, and the Australian Open for sure, Junior FIS World Championships, BWF Malaysia Masters, big air/slopestyle freestyle skiing and snowboarding/alpine snowboarding, other winter sports (Luge/bobsleigh/skeleton/alpine skiing), Speed Skating European Championships   Water Polo WC and Men’s Handball World Championships I’ll be following along with scores.
    • Rams could well beat Vikings and this is a real coin toss. Sam Darnold's first playoff game and he looked bad vs Lions last weekend in the #1 seed decider already. This is one of these rare games when a wild card team has a much better record and the home team is the underdog on paper but Rams can pull this one off and it ends up being a "non-upset" upset.
    • For my predictions I’m assessing a number of factors into it. For example in the comeback category, I prioritize injuries/life or career threatening stuff over breaks. World Championships, World Cups (and similar stuff for sports that don’t have those) also factor into it.    BEST MALE ATHLETE for sportsmen in Olympic sports   #1:  Leon Marchand #2:  Armand Duplantis (3 WR’s in a year…) #3:  Teddy Riner   Odermatt not being nominated is unexpected.      BEST FEMALE ATHLETE for sportswomen in Olympic sports   #1:  Summer McIntosh #2:  Sifan Hassan #3:  Lisa Carrington     BEST NON-OLYMPIC ATHLETE for athletes in Non-Olympic sports and disciplines   #1:  Shohei Ohtani #2:  Patrick Mahomes #3:  Max Verstappen     BEST PARALYMPIC ATHLETE for athletes with a disability   #1: #2: #3:     BEST YOUTH ATHLETE for athletes up to 18 years old (born after January 1st, 2006) (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  Summer McIntosh (again) #2:  Lamine Yamal #3:  Darja Varfolomeev     BEST MEN'S TEAM for national men's teams or groups (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  basketball team #2:  waterpolo team #3:  volleyball team     BEST WOMEN'S TEAM for national women's teams or groups (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  volleyball team #2:  handball team #3:  field hockey team   If I’m gonna be completely honest, after #1 and #2, I had a hard time choosing one because all four teams had their struggles…      BEST DOUBLES/PAIR OR MIXED TEAM for doubles and pairs or mixed teams and groups (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  Caterina Banti/Tito Ruggeri #2:  David Åhman/Jonatan Hellvig #3:  Paul O’Donovan/Fintan McCarthy   I had to let out a laugh when I saw that  Duda/AP were nominated, because even though they won gold they were not on the same page at all through most of the season and went months on the Beach Pro Tour between May and July without a single medal      BREAKTHROUGH OF THE YEAR for the most improved athlete (aged 19 or over) or national team (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  Adriana Ruano #2:  Jasmine Paolini #3:  Shinnosuke Oka   Again, some of the nominations are confusing to me.  Vaast is surfing at his home break in Tahiti and like a lot of sports that advantage is big,  Lafond had a best jump of 14.90m in 2023 and  Alfred was a medal contender in 2023 as well.    I would put  Joan-Benjamin Gaba up there, he came into the Olympics completely out of the medal mix and he won silver and beat Hifumi by ippon in the mixed team final     COMEBACK OF THE YEAR for athletes or national teams who made a comeback performance in 2024 (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  Sunisa Lee #2:  Paula Badosa #3:  Kristof Milak     SPORT MOMENT OF THE YEAR for any sport moment from 2024   #1:  Djokovic finally winning an Olympic gold medal in men’s singles tennis (and none of the other choices come close for me, honestly) #2:  Letsile Tebogo’s gold in the men’s 200m, first ever gold for Botswana and he also beats evil Lyles in the process  #3:  Armand Duplantis’ gold and WR in men’s pole vault   I wasn’t a fan the opening ceremony, and I thought the general consensus was that most people on here didn’t like it either, so I’m not sure on how it got nominated but…  Also thought there would be at least one non-Olympic nomination, but I guess not.   OLYMPIC SPIRIT AWARD for athletes or teams related to the 2024 Summer Olympics or Paralympics who exemplify the spirit of sportsmanship in the Games or showed great determination in overcoming obstacles   #1:  Kinzang Lhamo crossing the marathon finish line #2:  Fariba Hashimi fulfilling her Olympic dream, having to hide her practices from her parents and the Taliban for doing a “boys’ activity” #3: Same thing for  Manizha Talash, I can’t imagine how hard that must be for them…   Honestly, this was a tough category. Besides Skotheim, who I very clearly think is last… I feel like it could go in any order.
