Anand, with white pieces, draws against Anish Giri, the draw machine (13 games, 13 draws). With this his chances to qualify for the World Championship have shrunk to 0 as Karjakin and Caruana are both 0.5 points ahead and play each other in the final round tomorrow. Even if Anand with black pieces manages to beat Peter Svidler (another Russian, like Karjakin. Event happening in Moscow too) he would still require a draw between Karjakin and Caruana to level on points. From what I understand, in this case they would be separated according to head to head and Caruana would win in that scenario.

 

Do we expect a big announcement tomorrow?

Actually in the race to Rio MS

 

Kidambi has 50000 pts right now and even if he fails in all tournaments in the next 2 months he would reach rio in the top 16 .

 

actually five  Indians have a theoretical chance ........Taking only the tournaments from last may into account ->  Ajay has 40000 pts , Kashyap 38000, Prannoy  37000 pts , Sai 36000 and Sameer 35000 ( this is approx ) ...................... they would need to increase their scores to approx 50000 by April end to be on the safe side and finish in the top 16 .......
 

 

There are just 4 major tournaments left ................. Indian and Singapore Superseries and the Malaysian Superseries premier and  there is the badminton asia open individual ( carrying the same points as a super series )  and fifth not with the same points is the china masters ( grand prix gold )

so for ajay to make it  he needs to be in the semi-s of two of the first 4  tournaments to be in with a shot .................... presumably if he reaches the quarters of 3 of the 4 the will be in with a shot .... for kashyap/ prannoy the job is just the same almost except that they need to reach  an extra quarter ( Kashyap not playing in the Indian superseries makes his job more difficult but not impossible ) ....so Ajay and Prannoy have a chance but they need to reach at least the quarters of the Indian Open to retain this chance 

 

Sai and Sameer  have a long shot they would probably need to win a major title of these to be in with a chance ( also since they are coming through qualifiers ) this makes their task almost impossible

Thanks for the info. 2 men's singles players into the olympics would be a great achievement for the sport in India. Hope our men do it. Indian Superseries is very important. Hope one of our players wins it!

In the past Olympics, Paes was in top 10 in Men's Doubles (infact the best Indian doubles player) and hence was able to form a team without any issue. But the current situation is completely different with Paes ranked 61st & Bopanna 11th. Maybe, Paes must be optimistic that he can improve the rankings in next 2 months. Right now, I see him playing only Men's Doubles with Bopanna and Sania partnering Bopanna in XD..

 

I have a feeling that India might not field a Women's Doubles team so that Sania can solely focus on XD unless Ankita Raina improves by huge margin (break into top 150 or 200 in singles ranking, current singles rank is 281) or Prarthana Thonbare (break into top 125 in doubles ranking, current doubles rank is 228 - improved 30 places in last week) in next 2 months

It's too early to discuss.. The goal should be to improve the last time of 6 medals and secure atleast 2 gold medals (India has never won 2 gold medals in single Olympics)

 

Just like we did in 2012, we will be doing complete analysis of each & every India athlete going to Rio in June/July once Indian NOC & other NOCs have announced the respective teams

Since XD performance is not considered for rankkings, I completely agree with your point about Sania partnering with Bopanna/Paes in French Open & Wimbledon. But AITA must announce the possible team by April end or May 1st week
