Jacinto “Jack” Cayco, who represented the Philippines at the 1948 Olympics and won gold medals at the Asian Games, died Wednesday Feb. 17 at age 96.

 

A major figure in Philippine swimming history, Cayco swam in the 200 breaststroke at the 1948 Olympics in Helsinki, finishing 18th. He would go on to win that event at the 1951 Asian Games in New Delhi as well as a gold in the 3×100 medley relay.

 

Cayco also captained the Philippine delegation to the 1954 Asian Games in Manila and earned a silver medal in the 400 medley relay at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo. Cayco’s younger brother, Pedro Cayco, swam in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne.

Ex-USA Gymnastics coach John Geddert found dead after being charged with human trafficking and sex crimes.

 

John Geddert, who coached the 2012 US Olympic women's gymnastics team, was found dead Thursday after being charged with 24 felonies in connection with the abuse of young gymnasts, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Thursday.

Mark Pavelich, 'Miracle on Ice' team star, found dead at treatment center aged 63

 

Mark Pavelich, the speedy center from the Iron Range who played on the ‘Miracle on Ice’ Olympic hockey team, has died at a treatment center for mental illness. He was 63.

 

Pavelich assisted on Mike Eruzione’s winning goal against the heavily favored Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympics. He sold his gold medal for more than $250,000 in 2014, two years after wife Kara died in an accidental fall.

Impressive crowds considering football was a very much unknown sport in Japan in those days.  
 

Also football at the Olympics was very much an East European monopoly for many years.  No professional players were allowed, so officially  all the Dynamo Kiev, Dukla Prague & Honved Budapest players were simple steel workers, soldiers & coal miners, who just turned out for their factory team on Sunday afternoon, after spending the rest of the week with their spades & hammers.
