Sailing 2018 Discussion Thread

Does anyone know how continental championships work? I'm trying to create an athlete database. Do they ignore sailors from other continents or does a sailor from Europe get to be the North American champion?

Typically there are continental titles and open titles at the same time. “Foreign” athletes compete for the open, being excluded from the continental rankings

  • 1 month later...

The Board of World Sailing has proposed to introduce a two-person keelboat class to replace the idea of a mixed one person dinghy event for 2024 Olympics.

https://www.sail-world.com/news/211621/2024-Olympics-World-Sailing-Board-makes-late-bid

Could some of you here on the forum, who follow sailing more closely than me, explain why the Board wants to create and introduce so many new classes? Are they worried to lose their status as an olympic sport?

What

The idea is that a man and a woman from each country would sail in separate one-person boats, before having their scores added together at the end to determine a winner.

The idea sounds totally ridiculous. Not even IOC could come up with such an idea for a mixed event.

Oh yes this sounds fantastic! I already find it impossible to follow sailing with different routes being taken on the water depending on wind and currents you can not see, points systems where the worst results are scrapped so you need a calculator simply to look at the standings, adding more confusing sounds wonderful :woohoo:

not the full status, but they still have to follow those "gender equality" rules, so they want to put into the schedule more and more "mixed" events or try to replace some of the men's only classes with women's ones until the number of events and athletes is the same for the 2 main genders (they're so idiot that they don't even know nowadays the genders are not only 2 anymore...at least in some Countries )...

it's always all about that idiot policy the "new" IOC is pursuing, not looking at the actual sport outcome but at some not better specified interests...:wall:

Imagine they're gonna have to add separate classes and athletes for all genders :p

Then we will have ten competitions times number of genders and that's all folks. Probably only athletics and swimming will survive.

Sounds like a 2 person mixed keelboat will be added instead of the mixed one-person dinghy event. I guess that's really goodbye for finn, but it's better than the mixed idea.

Overall, there's a lot to do, for example, compared to Budapest, but unfortunately, this is Italy How many years has Roma been building their new stadium, and they keep pushing back the completion date- now I read it's 2030? and it should be ready. The same goes for Milan- there should be a modern complex of indoor swimming pools with 50 meters pools, etc., but there's a problem with one stupid football stadium, which will only be built after an ultimatum from UEFA

She wasn’t a top-tier athlete in that program anymore. She was at the end of her career. I would personally would rather race against Katie. She’s not as competitive as the other athletes,” he said. “It’s probably really unfair to say and not really where I want to go with this but that’s where we are with that.”   Uhlaender: “If I were Canada, I would be concerned in how this coach is representing the Olympic values for his country,” Uhlaender told Fox News Digital. “He hurt a whole field of athletes, all with dreams, and this sends the message that they don’t matter unless they are number one. All athletes matter, and we all deserve to compete fairly, with integrity, and respect. He did not respect anyone in that field. “This is not about my resume or how good the athletes were in the race. This is about the fact that he intentionally manipulated the competition to hurt myself and 13 other countries because he felt it necessary to eliminate all possibility. That is against the spirit of sport and not what the Olympic movement represents.”   Isn't it great when other people's dirty laundry is aired?  /sarcasm     (I was a little surprised to see NPR pick this up, but per this article, Uhlaender preemptively recorded the phone call after receiving a text from Cecchini that said he had 'bad news' for her.)
