In a bizarre incident, :HUN forfeited their gold medal match in 50x3 Men's Team because Istvan Peni and Zavan Pekler raised objection on Peter Sidi's rifle. ISSF officials had no problem with the rifle but the two Hungarians refused to take part in finals alongside Sidi. Now, the final will be played between :IND and :USA

I finally know the reason behind this incident. Sidi was disqualified at the Hungarian National Indoor Championships because of a bipod he used on his rifle. It's also quite apparent that Péni and Side hate each other, this isn't the first time Péni had objections against Sidi's rifle, and they had some rather vulgar verbal fights during the national finals.

So while ISSF had no issues with Sidi's rifle this time, given his recent history and disqualification the other two Hungarians likely thought that their team member was still cheating somehow.

Anyway, Sidi and Péni shouldn't be in the same team again. In fact, I think the Hungarian Federation should consider rejecting Sidi's Olympic quota and just not let him go to Tokyo, his previous incident and now this controversy should be enough justification. We can't risk him winning a medal or even a gold with some form of cheating.

ISSF has clarified that Sidi was not cheating. After Peni objected, they rechecked Sidi's rifle and came to the conclusion that he was using bipod as a weight. Basically, everyone except Peni thought that since bipod was glued and can't be moved, classifying it as a bipod is technically correct but a bit silly. And for once, organizers sided with common sense instead of literal interpretation of law.

Regardless of what ISSF decided, Péni made a statement saying that he decided to participate in the event with certain conditions regarding his teammates and Sidi didn't respect those. He said that "the behavior of our third teammate was unacceptable for him and Pekler".

To me, it seemed like Peni was being petty. But, I don't know anything personal about Peni or Sidi, so am not the best person to comment on it.

@Griff88 Opportunity for a WC medal. A huge suprise to reach bronze medal match in team 50m 3P  women ahead of some experienced nations in most keenly contested team event of the WC.

And they won it, did not expect that at all.

Apparently ISSF informed both Péni and Sidi that from now on bipods can't be used as weight at their events and they informed the ISSF jury members on this decision. So it looks like Péni was somehow right, but he still crossed a line because he and the other Hungarian team member should have still continued competing at the event. The Hungarian Federation found the behavior of all three Hungarian athletes unacceptable and fined them. The president of the Hungarian Federation said that if Sidi continues to "campaign against other Hungarian athletes on social media", which apparently he does, he won't be in the Olympic team. And he also said that Péni should concentrate on the competition instead of "helping" the ISSF jury.  They will take some measures to ensure that there won't be drama in Tokyo, which means that there will be some extra social distancing between Sidi and Péni.

    • There will be specialized double sculls...just not for an NOC if it is entering singles specialists.   Either enter 2 singles specialists, or 1 XD specialist pair.   But they can in theory compete in both events, I guess, if they qualify...our top M, I think, does both.   But there are 17M, 17W, and 30 Pairs allotted in the quota, so I don't think the intent is that every singles entry will be in doubles.   (Perhaps this gets to fall in line with Weightlifting, where due to max entry quota, an NOC can't enter in every event, even if they have the best athletes...here, unless you have a pair who qualifies in both.)
