Japanese women (and Kodaira more than any other) are just unbelievable...

I understand the fact that the Dutch skaters are focused on their Olympic selection races in a few weeks time and North Americans always hide themselves in the first part of the Olympic season, but wow! those girls are skating faster than ever and beyond any reasonable imagination...:yikes:

still,  don't expect them to sweep the field in Pyeonchang (not even Kodaira, who's gonna face a very different Sang Hwa Lee in 2 months time)...

If Wikipedia is to be believed, Pedro Causil is the first South American to ever qualify for the Olympics in speed skating, while this will be the first Olympics since 1936 (and the first since becoming independent from the Soviet Union) where Estonia competes in Speed Skating.

That is correct.

Thanks to Dutch domination in Sochi, which lead to subsequent reducing of max quotas and introduction of mass start, several big droughts are about to end. Denmark will have male speed skaters for the first time since 1964, Finland will have a female skater for the first time since 1980, Switzerland female 1980, Austria male 1998, Belarus male 2002.
